2013 WOLVES And on the sixth day of the inaugural CasseroleFest, The Milestone brings you 2013 Wolves. Neil MF Harper and Robert Childers bring the intensity to some heavy-handed industrial rock that's gritty, distorted and fun as hell to listen to. Subtle blues and progressive hints are layered in, but just grab a beer, sit back and enjoy it. With David Liebe Hart & Adam Papagan, Andy the Doorbum, PPR and For Science. $10. Ben Folds tonight (Nov. 20) at The Fillmore Charlotte

Posted By on Sat, Nov 20, 2010 at 10:32 AM

BEN FOLDS Talk about leaving town and making a name for yourself. Folds, a Winston-Salem native, formed Ben Folds Five in the mid-'90s and saw tons of success throughout their seven-year run. He, wisely, continued to put out solo projects. Now a solo act, he's not exactly making "punk rock for sissies" as he once put it, but with collaborator, Nick Hornby, he's put out solid, interesting music. Some with a hint of humor, others despair but always well-executed. His viral presence can't be understated as well — cool videos. $41.50, The Fillmore Charlotte, www.livenation.com

Local Leak: Deniro Farrar's Feel This

Posted By on Fri, Nov 19, 2010 at 2:49 PM

Rapper and Charlotte native, Deniro Farrar, had a midnight release for his first mixtape, Feel This.

The artist has only been in the game for a relatively short time but has already found stage time opening for icons like Nas and acts like Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y and others with his Black Flag brethren.

He's also made his online presence felt, kicking out eye catching videos in with Charlotte as the back drop, including his "So Appalled" freestyle (watch below) which was shot just around the corner from our offices at CL.

Months in the making, some might call the 31-tracks on Feel This overkill, I just say, bruh had a lot to say.

Anyone in the Triangle area can catch him performing with Dow Jones and Gorilla Zoe at the UNC-Chapel Hill's DKE Frat House tonight, celebrating the release.

Live review: Eric Benet

Posted By on Fri, Nov 19, 2010 at 11:02 AM

Eric Benet (opening for Fantasia)

Ovens Auditorium

Nov. 10, 2010

By Cheris Hodges

If you arrived at Ovens Auditorium Wednesday night only to see Fantasia’ s performance, you missed out on a sensual treat from R&B crooner Eric Benet.

Let’ s move on from the fact that he’s Halle Berry’s ex-husband, because he has what a lot of singers today lack — real talent.

Benet took to the stage in a slim fitted suit, black tie and aviator sunglasses — that didn’t stop the women in the audience from losing their minds, especially when he sang the sexy “ Chocolate Legs” from his latest CD, Love and Life.

Benet doesn’ t use cheap gimmicks to engage the crowd, he captivates them with his smooth voice and crisp delivery. It doesn’t hurt that his band is talented and jams like those old school players from back in the day.

Some of Benet’s biggest hits, “Spend My Life With You” and “Georgy Porgy,” which is a remake of 1978 Toto classic, are duets with popular R&B singers, Tamia and Faith Evans. I wondered how Benet would pull these songs off, since neither singer was at the show. He proves to have an ear for talent because his background singer handled the female part of both songs pleasantly.

Although, it would have been nice to see a bit more interaction between her and Benet during the performance of “Spend My Life With You,” since it is a romantic song and he even said people still tell him that it was their wedding song. However, that would be a cheap gimmick and Benet doesn’t need or use them.

Benet's latest single, “ Sometimes I Cry,” which is blowing up on Urban Adult

Contemporary stations, brought huge reaction from the audience as he showed his range going into his high falsetto before coming down to the tenor range he’s famous for. He makes you think of Prince singing “Darling Nikki” back in the day when he hits those high notes.

His new album, Lost in Time, drops on November 30, if his performance is any indication of the quality of the new album, it’s worth a listen.

Live Review: Fantasia Barrino

Posted By on Fri, Nov 19, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Fantasia Barrino

Ovens Auditorium

Nov. 10, 2010

The Deal: There’s really no place like home and former American Idol Fantasia Barrino proved this as she performed in front of a packed house at Ovens Auditorium.

The Good: Fantasia's stage performance was incredible and instead of ignoring the spinning controversy surrounding her personal life, the singer used her pain to fuel her fire. Highlights were her singing chart topping songs like “Bittersweet,” “When I See You” and “Even Angels.” But one of the rawest moments actually occurred during a wardrobe change as a clip played showing Fantasia, adorned in '50s style garb, saying simply “f*ck it” when asked what she thought about what people were saying about her. She performed for roughly an hour.

The Bad: Despite the quality of her voice , unless you were a die-hard fan, many of the songs she chose were, well…unrecognizable. Fortunately, she sounded so good she could’ve sung “I’m a Little Teapot” and the crowd still would have been rocking. And of course, in true Fantasia form, the shoes came off during one song. Anything involving feet automatically falls in the bad category. Should also be noted that Kandi Burress, who was scheduled to open the show, did not perform.

The Verdict: Fantasia put on a great show. She belted out anything and everything she sang with power and control and wasn’t afraid to work the stage and get into her performance. All those elimination rounds at Idol definitely paid off because it was obvious she felt completely comfortable in front of the audience of thousands. If you missed the “Back to Me” Tour no worries because the Charlotte resident is sure to be performing locally for many years to come.

Trampled By Turtles and Ghost Town Revelry tonight (Nov. 19)

Posted By on Fri, Nov 19, 2010 at 10:19 AM

TRAMPLED BY TURTLES Some members of Trampled by Turtles are refugees from indie and punk bands, so their bluegrass-laden Americana has a teeth-gritting fervor to it. The roots music outfit from the frozen climes of Duluth, Minn., fuses bluegrass, jug band and acoustic punk, with hell-bent fiddler, strummers and pickers, into rambunctious American music. The quintet is touring in support of its new recording, Palomino. With the Infamous String Dusters. $14-$16, Visulite Theatre, www.visulite.com

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

GHOST TOWN REVELRY The Charlotte quartet has been quietly evolving its sound since its inception a couple of years ago. Self-described as psychedelic space cowboy rock, translate that as swirling guitars and keyboards, touched with psychedelia, just the right amount of effects, funky bass, country and pop. Their genteel rock, with generally cohesive writing, is showcased in this CD release gig for their freshly pressed eight-song disc, Phasmatis Apparatus. With Bridges & Powerlines. $5, The Evening Muse, www.theeveningmuse.com

Jimmy Herring Band, Dave Barnes and Packway Handle Band all play tonight (Nov. 18)

Posted By on Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 9:12 AM

JIMMY HERRING BAND Herring, longtime sideman in bands such as Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Allman Brothers Band and the Dead (and current gunslinger for Widespread Panic) is making his second stint as a bandleader on this tour — and what a band it is. Along with Herring, JHB features drummer Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit), keyboardist Matt Slocum (Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks), and Neal Fountain on bass (Col Bruce Hampton). Those who've seen the guitarist in person know that Herring's style — a pepperpot of raga-inspired rags, clean, piercing runs and free improvisation — ought to accent his jazzbo-jam backing band to a T. $23-$26, Visulite Theatre, www.visulite.com (Timothy C. Davis)

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

DAVE BARNES Born in South Carolina, this Mississippi-raised singer/songwriter has taken a lifetime of R&B/soul, blues and rock influences and transformed that into a soulful, folk rock of his own. Completely immersed in the Nashville scene, his music isn't what that city usual puts out, but it's certainly got the same heart behind it. Who would've expected this from someone whose first CD was Young MC? $20, The Evening Muse, www.theeveningmuse.com (Mike McCray)

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

PACKWAY HANDLE BAND Another good ole bluegrass outfit from the fertile musical plains of Athens, Ga. Nothin' fancy here, just Southern, rural heartland music. Time-tested acoustic instruments and melodies are played with heart and a sense of belonging. Now coming up on a full decade of making music, their tight-knit harmonies and swift plucking remain intact. Count PHB among the genuine. With Big Daddy Love. $5, Double Door Inn, www.doubledoorinn.com (Samir Shukla)
