Michelle Shocked and Fantasia tonight (Nov. 17)

Posted By on Wed, Nov 17, 2010 at 11:11 AM

MICHELLE SHOCKED Since her out-of-nowhere debut album The Texas Campfire Tapes (it was recorded on a Sony Walkman tape recorder, er, around a campfire in Texas) and 1988's Short Sharp Shocked, which earned her a sizable pre-NPR Song of the Day/Starbucks listenership, Shocked hasn't exactly set the world on fire, you'd be forgiven for thinking. Except that she's been singularly excellent ever since those early successes, if she didn't exactly fit into the whole cowpunk/rebel grrl box the media had her fitted for, even delving into gospel, dub and bluegrass in recent years, all to fine effect. $20-$35, Neighborhood Theatre, www.neighborhoodtheatre.com (Timothy C. Davis)

FANTASIA To say the last year has been turbulent for former American Idol and Charlotte resident Fantasia Barrino would be an understatement. After a suicide attempt earlier this year, Fantasia has regained her focus on music and is returning to the road. The current tour is in support of her third album, Back to Me. With Eric Benet and Kandi. $46-$86. Ovens Auditorium. www.ovensauditorium.com (Jeff Hahne)

Young, Springsteen "Whip My Hair" on Fallon

Posted By on Wed, Nov 17, 2010 at 10:15 AM

Jimmy Fallon, performing as Neil Young, and Bruce Springsteen, playing a younger version of himself, sang Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" last night.

Let me first say, although she's only 10, "Whip My Hair" has to be one of this year's most incredibly annoying songs. That chorus is like nails on a chalkboard. However, Fallon and Springsteen give it the classic rock treatment...

Local rapper signs with Jive

sdub

Got word for Sony Music earlier today that Charlotte native, S Dub, is Jive Records' newest signee.

In the release, Jive's A&R Manager, Ant Rich, said, “S Dub’s ability to make records that have an innate sense of commercialism without compromising any sense of integrity will no doubt lead to great success on the charts as well as in the streets. We are very excited to have formed this partnership and look forward to the continued success.”

All S Dub had to say about his signing was, “I feel honored and blessed to show my talent to the World and look forward to cementing a foundation for myself. I hope to represent the best of what North Carolina has to offer.”

Jersey Shore girl tries to rap

Posted By on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 3:36 PM

A clip has been released from the first song by Angelina from The Jersey Shore, a "reality" show on MTV.

It's called "I'm Hot."

angelina_song.mp3

Um... this song sucks. No other way to say it. Probably the worst thing to hit the air since, well, The Jersey Shore... or one of the songs from the Real Housewives.
