The Cult w/ The Black Ryders
The Fillmore Charlotte
Nov. 13, 2010
The Deal: Rockers The Cult offer short, half-hearted set to half-packed Fillmore.
Like many Charlotte-area musicians, I met Stuart when I took a crappy three-song demo down to the Salvador Deli in NoDa. Stuart took me back to his office and played the CD and said, Sounds good, lets get you a date. It was that easy. Stuart was always giving local musicians a great venue to play in, a venue that put them in front of music-lovers from all walks of life.
My band owes Stuart Sloan a lot. Not only did he help get us started, but he would give us great summer dates to play and those shows helped spread the word about our music. It will always be one of our favorite places to play music.
We will miss hanging out with Stu before and after the show and playing to such a great group of people under the night sky. Further, Stu was always great to chat with before and after shows. My guess is that there are many local and regional bands that are feeling the same mix of gratitude and sadness that myself and my bandmates are feeling right now
Each Friday, we review 10 recently released CDs in 10 words each:

I don't know the details, but I don't think it matters. What I do know is that Stuart Sloan, owner of Salvador Deli in NoDa, has died. He will truly be missed in the neighborhood and in the music scene.
Stuart often had shows in the alleyway next to the Deli he even threw a free concert to celebrate his birthday a couple of months ago. Aside from holding shows at the Deli, I often saw him walking around the neighborhood at a variety of shows at the Neighborhood Theatre, at the recent White Trash Party and at other venues around town. He got involved with FemmeFest and DudeFest and always did what he could to make the neighborhood better and help out the music scene.
Rest in peace, Stuart. I'm sure you're seeing some great live music wherever you are...
UPDATE: I just got sent this by Lauren Puckett, wife of the man who painted the mural next to Salvador Deli.
"My husband, Will Puckett, painted a halo over Stu's picture in the mural this morning, and then he snapped a photo of it - and this happened."

We all have that friend. You know, she's cool or whatever. You'd totally sleep with her, but she's well a slut. And everybody knows it.
Today's Local Leak comes from Charlotte rock outfit, The Flash Alchemy. "Slut" travels down pretty worn territory but is clever, while frenetically explaining the scenario. You know what she is, she knows what she wants. At least they're upfront about using her and at the end of the day, no hearts are broken but everyone gets broke off. Win-win, right?
Enjoy. (Side note: Don't wife the roller...seriously).
Jimi Hendrix: The Guitar Hero
Image Entertainment; Release date: Sept. 14, 2010
The Deal: DVD takes a look at the guitar-playing ability of Jimi Hendrix via historical clips and new interviews with Slash, Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones), Eric Burdon (The Animals), Paul Rodgers (Bad Company), Ginger Baker (Cream), Bev Bevan (ELO), Crosby, Stills and Nash and others.
The Good: Instead of a typical biography, this film looks at the history of his guitar playing. It kicks off with Hendrix arriving in London in 1966 to play with Eric Clapton and Cream. It discusses the start of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, his performance style, his drug use and other topics with various musicians who were at different concerts sharing their views and experiences on what they witnessed.
