Free show kicks the summer off

Posted By on Fri, May 27, 2011 at 11:00 AM

Memorial Day is the signal for summertime, which means lots of outdoor festivities. Even though it's hosted the day before, The U.S. National Whitewater Center plans to commemorate the season and soldiers with three bands and a fireworks display. It's a completely free-of-charge festival that brings on the American music on Sunday, May 29.

American Aquarium, a Raleigh-based band with Americana leanings, starts the trio of concerts planned for the day at 3 p.m.

The roots music show continues with The Apache Relay's indie folk and fiddle playing, and Trampled by Turtles, the headlining act, will take on the soundtrack for the celebration.

Be sure to stick around for fireworks at 9 p.m., also free for the public.

Part of the Whitewater River Jam series, the celebration is a highlight on the calendar. The Whitewater Center has more information on its site.

Live review: Treasure Fest

Treasure Fest

May 20, 21, 2011

Various venues

The Deal: From the moment I heard about Treasure Fest, I was more stoked than I had ever been about an event in Charlotte. For the first time, we would have a real underground music festival, showcasing some of Charlotte and the East Coast's best talent in the best venues we have to offer in Plaza-Midwood and the west side at the Milestone.

At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by the quantity of acts I had to choose from, but the more I learned about the many touring bands playing, the more I realized that something special was about to happen right in my backyard. We needed something like this in Charlotte. Our scene is too rich to even attempt to look past it. That said, I knew that on May 20-21 this year, a meeting of various creative minds would take place in my hometown and in turn, my mind would be blown.

The Farewell Monument, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy tonight (5/27/11)

Posted By on Fri, May 27, 2011 at 9:25 AM

The Farewell Monument Spawned from members of People and As Long As Today in 2009, this Charlotte quartet is a dope instrumental act that just released their Harm’s Way EP earlier this month. There’s such a thing as no frills and then there’s these guys, who create epic tunes without saying a word. You can totally get lost in it. Arm The Brave and Asheville’s Albert Adams joins. $7-$9. The Milestone. www.themilestoneclub.com. (Mike McCray)

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy This retro swing outfit hit it big in the mid-’90s, but the music is still as timeless as ever. They play a great mix of amped up jazz mixed with their own spicy covers of songs by artists such as Cab Calloway.  Part of the Fridays at the Factory series. $5. N.C. Music Factory. www.ncmusicfactory.com. (Jeff Hahne)

SNUG 600 hosts 12 bands in 3 nights

Posted By on Thu, May 26, 2011 at 2:06 PM

On Sunday, Charlotte has the Coca-Cola 600 for fans of a fast marathon. For those of you craving a marathon of bands that changes more than Darrell Waltrip's tires, Snug Harbor brings the SNUG 600 — a slew of local acts on three different nights.

Six bucks gets you in on Friday night's lineup of the Temperance League; The Beggars; Colossus; and returning for another go at the Snug, Jeremiah & The Howling Owls. Expect distorted guitars and a wide spectrum of rock music.

For a dollar more, Saturday's show brings The Belmont Playboys, Aqualads, Lamb Handler, and Glowing Bordis under the roof, and just like Friday's feature, none of the bands sound alike.

The final Sunday night show has Modern Primitives, metal from The Poontanglers, The Chalkies, and lo-fi duo AM/FM's to round out SNUG 600. This show is $6 and might be the most diverse of the three nights.

Each show starts at 9 p.m., so even if you are race fan, you still have a chance to check out a myriad of bands. Surf rock, freaky folk and garage punk: it's like a convention of rock's genres all from North Carolina-based groups.

Live review: The Memorials

Memorials2

The Deal: Former Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen returns to the scene with his new band, The Memorials.

The Good: First of all, I don't know the entire story. I only know that Pridgen was the drummer for the Mars Volta when they played at the Fillmore, and that Pridgen left the show in a taxi, having played his last gig with the band. Regardless of any of that, Pridgen has launched a new rock quintet called The Memorials, featuring two friends from the Berklee College of Music — Nick Brewer and Viveca Hawkins, bringing him back to the N.C. Music Factory.

The band took the stage around 11 p.m. on its way to a nine-song, hour-long set that showcased not only Pridgen's drum skills, but plenty of other talent as well.

Memorials7

Singer Hawkins has plenty of stage presence to go around, finding time to shake her head, dance to the beat or just engage the audience and draw them in. Her vocals found a balance between rock and soul.

Memorials5

Guitarist Brewer not only knew when to hold back or step out of the way to let Pridgen shine, but also knew when to unleash everything he had in a fury or neck-breaking finger-work.

Memorials1

It was Pridgen's drum work that took a good bit of the spotlight. He needs strong players like Brewer and Hawkins to balance things out, but he hammers away with ease and power, defining the rhythm of each song. While some might have more of a salsa beat behind the rock and others are built on pure drum riffs, it's not just a drummer's "jerk off" session. There's definitely a method to his madness.

Pridgen performed the set with his drumkit facing backwards and didn't look back at the crowd often, but there was usually a smile on his face when he did.

The band played a number of songs from its self-titled debut mixed with a few others, but the small crowd soaked up every minute.

The Bad: That I missed the opener, Lucky Five, but I was across town here.

The Verdict: A strong rock band that's fueled by drums without being overpowering. A bigger crowd would have been nice, but I'm sure word will spread quickly if/when they return.

Company tonight (5/26/11)

Posted By on Thu, May 26, 2011 at 9:25 AM

Company When you’re neighbors with Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, whose reputation for helping out fellow musicians is well-deserved, good things can happen. For this Charleston, S.C., quartet, that meant everything from a band name (they were formerly known as Ko, a symbol from the I Ching) and a BoH opening slot to a debut EP on Bridwell’s Fat Possum imprint, Brown Records. Company’s new full-length, Holy City (on Exitstencil Records) is perfectly serviceable if unspectacular indie tinged with Southern rock, alternating between GBV lo-fi and the lush reverb of Bridwell’s own band. With Filmstrip, Veda Woolf and Dear Kavalier. $7/$9. Milestone. www.themilestoneclub.com.
