Sunny Ledfurd's NC country goodness - Tonight @ Amos' Southend

Posted By on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 7:16 AM

Growing up in the shadow of Charlotte, also known as Cramerton, Ledfurd has flown under many radars since releasing his first album in 2003. Six albums later, he still makes his brand of country music doused with influences you’d expect like Glenn Campbell and The Rolling Stones, and ones you wouldn’t like Snoop Dogg and Eminem. Cutting his teeth in Carolina bars, he built his home studio and already has a big enough catalog to tour on his greatest hits.

$10. Amos’ Southend

Live review: Mr. Invisible, Meek Is Murder

Posted By on Wed, Nov 23, 2011 at 1:21 PM

Mr. Invisible, Meek is Murder, East of the Wall, Dead Sea $crilla
The Milestone
Nov. 21, 2011

There's not often a night that is booked so well it can incorporate two genres, from one end of the spectrum to the other. In recent years, hip-hop and metal have grown closely related in audience, but, when it comes down to it, they are like apples and oranges. However, sometimes they can coexist and create something spectacular — a night of smooth transitions from nodding heads to flying hair, from singing guitars to dope beats, ass shaking and hand waving. This was the scene at the Milestone this past Monday night as a showcase of brutality in two forms took the stage.

Before the audience could gather themselves, Brooklyn's Meek is Murder came with the sickness as their technical metal dominated ears across the venue. Jaws dropped as they shredded their guitars, massacred the drums and screamed in a rabid frenzy. Bodies flung to every note and breakdown. Hip-hop kids got down to the brutality well into the next set from East of the Wall, Meek is Murder's touring companion who progressed into a medley of harsh screams over triple guitar overlay and hard hitting drums.

'Occupy' a bunch of damn good bands and DJs

Posted By on Wed, Nov 23, 2011 at 11:59 AM

Occupy Fuck Ye!
  • Occupy Fuck Ye!
Complainers (mostly of the baby boomer variety) often talk about how musicians don't care anymore. They're not as political as they ought to be. They're not changing the world. They don't get involved.

We know that's a bunch of bull crap, of course. Just because the artists aren't holding hands and singing "We Shall Overcome" doesn't mean they're not shaking your windows and rattling your walls.

To wit: A big bunch of kick-ass rockers, neo-folkies, DJs and free-jazz squawkers have joined forces with NYC's Occupy Musicians, whose mission seems simple. They're stating their unequivocal support of Occupy Wall Street and the Occupy movements around the country and world. Hopefully, that support will result in some glorious music, protest and otherwise — not to mention the popping up of Occupy Musicians groups in smaller markets like, say... Charlotte?

Modern Primitives' garage rock for charity - Tonight @ Snug Harbor

Posted By on Wed, Nov 23, 2011 at 9:45 AM

Heralded in some corners as one of the city’s up-and-coming acts, Modern Primitives' garage-rock is more White Stripes than Greenhornes, more Black Lips than Ty Segal, and probably more psych-blues rock than garage-rock in the first place. It favors raw over melodic, but still knows where the hooks are — you just have to wait a little longer and the payoff doesn’t get you quite as buzzed.

ComScore

This night is also the 8th Annual P-M Suit Night, so de-dustball those Armanis, Nudie suits and Men’s Wearhouse duds and bring some grub to benefit the Shelter for Battered Women. A couple of cans/non-perishable food donations will get you in for free; 10 of ‘em will get you slightly closer to heaven, though I wouldn’t hold your breath on getting in. DJ Shawn Lynch is spinning vinyl as well, and it’s said his record collection is among the finest in all the land.

This week's new releases (11/22/2011)

Posted By on Tue, Nov 22, 2011 at 12:14 PM

Here's a quick rundown of what's new in stores this week (with smart-ass commentary courtesy of Mark Kemp):

Kate Bush 50 Words for Snow — Ooo, babooshka! And we thought she'd turned into Tori Amos.

Chris Cornell Songbook — Imagine Chris Cornell singing "Imagine" and you will get nostalgic for "Full on Kevin's Mom."

Daughtry Break the Spell — What "spell"? Dude, it's not like you're Daltrey.

Adam Lambert Beg for Mercy — You mean beg for a new stylist, don't you?

Matisyahu Miracle — The greatest Hasidic reggae star ever! EVER!! (Wait, he's the only one ever?)

Nickelback Here & Now — You mean There & When I Liked Both Nirvana and Hair Metal.

Rihanna Talk That Talk — Isn't she still with that baseball player everybody always mistakes for me?

The Rolling Stones Some Girls: Deluxe Edition — Does the deluxe edition include even more ethnic women stereotypes?

Bob Seger Ultimate Hits: Rock And Roll Never Forgets — TV commercials never forget either.

Taylor Swift Speak Now World Tour Live — She's country, right? But not a redneck woman or a crazy ex-girlfriend. I get so confused!

Yelawolf Radioactive — With guest appearances from his brother Maroonwolf.

Mike Posner has released his fourth mixtape entitled, The Layover. The Duke University graduate's sophomore studio effort is scheduled for 2012.

If you're hoping someone from an institution of higher learning would offer some smart music, you'd better look elsewhere. Posner's stuff has been mostly cooked up for the masses and top 40 radio so far — the rich frat guy in school decided to make a record. Dude even wore a letterman's jacket during his AWOL performance in Charlotte this year. Help from Big K.R.I.T. and Michael Franti won't help.

Here's the tracklisting for The Layover:
1. The Layover ft. Don Cannon
2. Wonderwall ft. Big K.R.I.T. (Drive to This)
3. Shut Up ft. Rusko (Drive to This)
4. Henny & Purple ft. Slim Thug (Smoke & Drive to This)
5. Looks Like Sex [Snippet] (Pull a Bad Bitch to This)

7. Blackout Remix (Pre-Game to This)
8. Hey Lady ft. Twista (Fuck to This)
9. Marauder Music ft. Blackbear (Drive in the Dark to This)
10. Long Time (Vibe to This)
11. They Call Me ft. Bei Maejor (Ride to This)
12. 21 Days (Chill to This)
13. Attitdues ft. Casey Veggies (Blaze to This)
14. Traveling Man (Reminisce to This)
15. On Fire (Drug Dealer Girl Part II) ft. Machine Gun Kelly (Rage To This)
16. Room 925 ft. Cyhi Da Prynce (Fuck to This)
17. Mittens Up ft. Elzhi & Dusty McFly (Represent Your Shit to This)
18. A Perfect Mess (Think to This)
