The Legacy Committee live at Mez (Jan. 20)

Posted By on Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 8:53 AM

THE LEGACY COMMITTEE Sometimes you just have to go all out. Instead of your standard video premiere and album release party, this Charlotte pop-rap crew pulled out the stops and got a movie theater to debut Orion’s video “Watch You Fall” followed by a live performance by the entire crew. DJ Red is also on the bill for the pre-party. Charlotte’s not short on ambition. Mez.

Annuals play Snug Harbor tonight (1/20/12)

Posted By on Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 8:00 AM

ANNUALS It’s a long way from major label-dom and Next Big Thing-ism to a Friday night at Snug, but that’s not a bad thing, per se. Heaped with viral praise after 2006’s debut, Be He Me, and signed to Sony for their follow-up, this Raleigh act got dumped just as speedily when the blogosphere moved on to the next shiny object. And good for Annuals in the long run, as they’re free now to winnow down their melange of bubbly synths, enormous Arcade Fire choruses, Sufjan Stevens folk and occasional Four Tet beats into a more focused and individualistic sound. They’ve been hanging out with wunderkind Triangle producer BJ Burton (Love Language, Megafaun), so that should help. With Lonnie Walker and newly formed locals Hectorina (Dylan Gilbert, Linus Van Pelt). $8. Snug Harbor.

Rebelution play The Fillmore Charlotte (Jan. 19)

Posted By on Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 8:50 AM

REBELUTION This California quartet plays reggae with a sunny disposition and jamb band ethos. Clean vocals are tossed over dub and acoustic treatments while the infusion of sax, cello, and keys add sultriness to the mix. What makes them intriguing is their ability and predilection for experimentation. There’s a deluxe version of their new recording, Peace of Mind, which features three albums, the other two albums respectively feature acoustic and dub versions of the same sequence of songs. With The Grouch and Pep Love. $19. The Fillmore Charlotte. www.livenation.com.

Genre-bending songwriter Eilen Jewell plays Visulite Theatre (Jan. 19)

Posted By on Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 8:36 AM

Eilen Jewell has a sweet subtlety that makes its way through her lyrics regardless of the genre you might try to pigeon-hole it into. Merging elements of Americana, country, honky-tonk, blues and rock, Jewell’s style is one all her own, giving enough retro feel to harken the old days while containing enough bite to stop it from being boring. Her guitarist, Jerry Miller, is one to keep an ear on, too. $12-$15. With The Loudermilks. The Visulite Theatre.

Paint Fumes rock The Milestone tonight (Jan. 18)

Posted By on Wed, Jan 18, 2012 at 3:23 PM

PAINT FUMES One of the bright young lights in Charlotte’s rambunctious garage scene, the Sewercide denizens just signed with Slovenly Recordings, home to fellow travelers like Subsonics and The Spits. They’ll drop their debut, Uck Life, this spring, while the release of their debut 7-inch — featuring “Egyptian Rat” b/w “Waste of Time” and “Panic Attack” — serves as a tasty teaser in the meantime. With these Paint Fumes you’ll catch raw whiffs of the MC5 and Oblivians, and that’s never a bad buzz. With locals Temperance League and Joint Damage in support, as well as Greensboro’s intriguing Drag Sounds. $6-$7. The Milestone.

Dylan Gilbert, Ben Henry set to discuss songwriting tonight (Jan. 18)

Posted By on Wed, Jan 18, 2012 at 1:31 PM

Though he’s busy with his latest band, Hectorina, that doesn’t mean Dylan Gilbert has put his solo days aside. He’s been a consistent songwriter for years, often recording in his home studio, and appears as comfortable with an acoustic guitar as he does with an electric behind a board full of pedals. He and Ben Henry get the on-stage q&a treatment on this night. $6. 8 p.m. The Evening Muse. .

Juan Miguel Marin, formerly a member of the Charlotte Latin-alternative quintet La Rúa, will celebrate the world premiere of his feature film, La Casa del Ritmo, A Film About Los Amigos Invisibles, at the Miami International Film Festival in March.

The film shares the musical journey of Los Amigos Invisibles over the last 20 years through conversations with each of the six original band members, as well as David Byrne (Talking Heads)
and Yale Evelev - both formerly of Luaka Bop — and a concert shot in New York City in March of 2011 at the Highline Ballroom. Marin worked on the film with his wife and former CL photographer, Catalina Kulczar-Marin, and Ecuadorian director Javier Andrade.

As a part of La Rúa, Marin toured with Los Amigos Invisibles in 2005 and 2006 and was inspired by the band's hard work, devotion to their music and commitment to their fans. Marin, an Ecuadorian artist/musician who is now based in N.Y.C., had a chance encounter with LAI bass player Jose Rafael Torres in 2010 in which the two discussed the band's 20-year anniversary taking place in 2011.
