Lollapalooza 2010
Grant Park, Chicago
Aug. 7, 2010
Day two of Lollapalooza got started, for me, around 1:45 p.m. with a set by Blues Traveler. The blues-rock jam band kicked off its set with "Runaround" before going into a cover of Sublime's "What I Got," both of which quickly won over the crowd.
Paul McCartney
Time Warner Cable Arena
July 28, 2010
The Deal: Legendary musician hits Charlotte for two-hour-and-45-minute show full of hits, classics and solo tunes.
GBH w/ Outernational
Tremont Music Hall
July 27, 2010
The Deal: A good old fashioned punk rock show at Tremont with Antiseen, Outernational and GBH. Emphasis on old. It was kind of weird and funny to see 40 and 50 year-old weathered punks in the crowd and on stage. Re-scheduled show from June 2.
Sick Puppies w/ Janus, It's Alive
Amos' Southend
July 27, 2010
The Deal: Australia's Sick Puppies rocks Amos', brings along some cheese and whine.
The Good: I'll talk about the opening bands later, so let's just jump straight to the main event. The thing that struck me immediately was bassist Emma Anzai, who got into it from the first notes a bit of slap bass, driving the music and rarely standing still. Singer/guitarist Shimon Moore balances smooth vocals with something a little bit more raspier when he screams for a tone that works well with the music.
After playing "My World," the band ran through a few bars of Rage Against the Machine's "Bombtrack" before starting "Odd One."
Of course Moore said it was just for Charlotte, but I'm guessing they do the three-song acoustic breakdown at every tour stop. They played "All the Same," "What Are you Looking For?" and "Too Many," before ramping the sound back up to 10.
Carnival of Madness w/ Shinedown, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Sevendust and 10 Years
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
July 24, 2010
The Deal: Carnival of Madness Tour hits hot amphitheatre for six hours of music without the carnival atmosphere.
Cowboy Junkies
McGlohon Theatre
July 21, 2010
The Deal: It was Toronto, Canadas own soulful and bluesy rock band Cowboy Junkies at McGlohon Theatre all by their lonesome. They are touring in support of their new release, Renmin Park, one of four albums they have produced in 18 months called the Nomad Series.
The Good: McGlohon Theatres 730-seat setup is very intimate and breathtaking especially the stained-glass windows and the Byzantine dome from the previous First Baptist Church that was once located there. Its interior shape also made way for some great acoustics.
I had always loved lead vocalist Margo Timmins voice ever since I first heard her sing their version of Lou Reeds Sweet Jane off of The Trinity Session album in 1988, and I figured I was in for a treat. I was.
Dave Matthews Band w/ Amos Lee
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
July 21, 2010

Smashing Pumpkins w/ Kill Hannah, Bad City
The Fillmore Charlotte
July 16, 2010
The Deal: Billy Corgan's latest incarnation of Smashing Pumpkins hits The Fillmore with fellow Chicago bands Kill Hannah and Bad City.
Patty Griffin Tribute
Evening Muse
July 14, 2010
On July 14, 2010, the inaugural Patty Griffin Tribute Night was held at the Evening Muse. A good number of Charlotte-area musicians gathered to pay tribute to the singer-songwriter in front of a packed house.
Among those performing were Reeve Coobs, Miranda Reger, Andrea McGhee, Amissville, Donna Duncan, Etta Lea, Eva Gael, Wavy Space, Jess Mitchell and a bunch more. A house band, dubbed the Silver Bells, included John Tosco, Arrie Bozeman and Joe Kuhlman.
With singalongs and good participation from the crowd and artists, organizer Lea Kuhlmann hinted that they just might do this again next year.
