The Red Hot Chili Peppers brought their legendary brand of punk rock and funk to Charlotte’s Spectrum Center Monday night as part of their 2017 North American Tour. The quartet has been going strong (with a few lineup changes) since its formation in 1983 and managed to pack every seat in the arena. The RHCP have a way of bridging the generation gap, as evidenced by the wide age ranges in attendance on Monday night. There were parents introducing their 10-year olds to the band that defined their young adulthood, older folks rocking out as hard as they did in their youth and high schoolers just discovering their discography.
With half of Charlotte seemingly in attendance for the big show, there was a lot to be heard:
One of the hundreds of concert goers swarming the concessions stands in an effort to escape Babymetal, the opening band’s, performance: “You guys in line for beer?...FUCK!”
A man in awe of the apparent uniform worn by a good portion of the crowd: “There’s flannel everywhere…”
Older man at the concessions stand, referring to all of the tweens and teens attending the show: “It’s like Disney World in here.”
Two millenials in their Target RHCP gear, greeting each other across the crowd: “Bro?!” “BRO!!”
A parent as they grudgingly coughed up the dough for their child’s souvenir: “$80 for a hoodie? Who do they think they are, The Beatles?”
A wide-eyed young man grabbing pizza at the concession stand “I feel like I’m in a white man’s Narnia.”
Man on a beer run: “Yup, that’s about right…four hundred dollars for one ticket and two beers.”
A mom talking about her children’s induction into the RHCP tradition: “We’re in the nosebleeds, but they won’t care. It’s their first concert.”

There's a common theme running through live reviews of Big Sean's I Decided Tour — he should be performing in bigger venues. The excitement for the Detroit rapper started early and rarely waned once he hit the Fillmore's stage. Even openers MadeinTYO and Neisha Ne'shae got the sold-out venue's crowd quickly into the show. It could have been because of a Friday night concert, but it's more likely because Big Sean has had commercial success while maintaining a balance between moments of humility and bravado. His recent single "Bounce Back" has gone double platinum and he continues to earn the respect of fellow rappers. I wouldn't expect him to play in venues of this size for much longer.

There's no warmup time when Gogol Bordello hits the stage. From the opening notes, the gypsy punk outfit rocks, rolls and offers a relentless party atmosphere. The band's nonstop energy is infectious and rarely wanes before the last notes ring out. Singer/frontman Eugene Hutz was drenched in sweat after only a few songs. Don't know the words to all 20+ songs the band offered? No problem. The groove never stops and neither did the dancing until the four-song encore was over. Gogol Bordello has been on my list of top 10 bands to see live for nearly a decade. Wednesday night's show simply reinforced that idea.

As post-hardcore inspiration Thursday hit the stage, it wasn't immediately evident who was more excited — the band or the crowd. Having reunited after a five-year hiatus, the group was ready to charge through its catalog, while fans crowd surfed and sang along. A three-hour buildup to the group's first notes had the energetic crowd primed. The night started with a set by Wax Idols, featuring singer Hether Fortune (ex- White Lung) and their brand of post-punk. Touche Amore was more in the vein of what people were looking for on this night, and it didn't take long for a circle pit to start up. Basement, having themselves reunited a couple of years ago, offered a slightly more emo approach before Thursday hit the stage hot and powered through their set in an unrelenting manner.

Riding on a unicorn. Tumbling across the crowd in an inflatable hamster ball. More confetti than a Super Bowl parade. Rainbows of LED lighting. Inflatable characters. Two encores. A giant balloon that read "Fuck Yeah Charlotte." There's no LSD needed at a Flaming Lips show because the entire performance is one massive trip. From the opening notes of "Race for the Prize" to the final sing-along of "Do You Realize?" frontman/singer Wayne Coyne never let up with his enthusiasm. Between the songs, the props and the lighting, the alt-rockers never fail to surprise or impress with their stage show. On Thursday night, it wasn't just another concert, it was a memorable event.

"I came to America as a refugee," singer/pianist Regina Spektor told the sold-out crowd of Charlotte's Fillmore on March, 17, 2017. "I am now a citizen who believes in open doors." The comments earned the 37-year-old a roar of applause. From the first notes of her set opener, "On the Radio," to the final song of her four-song encore, Regina Spektor kept the audience completely charmed. She had them laughing to the "Sailor Song" chorus of "Mary Ann's a bitch," and enthralled by any short story she offered between songs, spending most of the night behind her Steinway piano. Her endearing personality has been present since those early days of New York's anti-folk scene of the early 2000s, but it's her talent as a songwriter that has given her longevity. Don't miss out on her performance, the next time she comes to town.

Charlotte has been waiting for a Run the Jewels concert since the group's self-titled debut album was released in 2013. The hip-hop duo comprised of Killer Mike and El-P had played nearly every other major city in the Carolinas. So, it's no surprise that on Tuesday night, the packed AvidXchange Music Factory venue was primed for the performance. The crowd fed off of the duo's energy, with neither letting up for the 70-minute duration. From the opening notes of "Talk to Me" through the opening encore of "Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)," it was worth the nearly four-year wait. RTJ proved why they are one of the hottest acts in hip-hop. The night opened with a brief set by Charlotte rapper Well$. While he offered a solid performance, it was a rough spot to be in when so many people were awaiting the headliners.

The Underground packed a double-punch of Colony House and Deep Sea Diver on Tuesday night, enthralling a solid crowd in the AvidXchange Music Factory venue.
Seattle's Deep Sea Diver opened the night with a strong set full of feedback, playful rhythms and indie-rock sensibilities. Singer/guitarist Jessica Dobson has incorporated plenty of her previous experiences with bands including Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Shins into her own project. (Am I the only one who'd love to see "a Deep Sea Diver show in Snug Harbor," even if only for the humorous billing?)
Colony House got the crowd moving with a set full of upbeat, pop-infused indie rock. The Tennessee quartet's set focused strongly on its most recent album, Only the Lonely, offering plenty of sing-alongs in the process.

While Sleigh Bells' fourth studio effort, Jessica Rabbit, may sonically present itself differently than previous albums, live the songs are seamless walls of thunderous guitars and bass topped off with the playful lyrics of singer Alexis Krauss. Krauss herself is a whirling dervish of a dancer who only stops long enough to get a drink of water. The band's raucous set was a balance of singles from over the years with plenty of new material mixed in. When bands like this crush the close quarters of The Underground, you can only wonder why more people weren't there to get them back in The Fillmore's larger room. Maybe next time...

For the last four years, Evanescence fans have waited for a reunion tour after the hard rock band went on hiatus in 2012. Charlotte-area fans got their wish with a tour stop at the Fillmore on Tuesday night that didn't disappoint from the opening notes to the closing chords.
The night opened with a short set from Veridia that set the tone early with its hard rock sound. The band was solid, yet a bit forgettable, simply offering a good warmup set. The crowd's focus was on what was yet to come.
Then, Evanescence hit the stage with the energy of a quintet who acted like they'd never been offstage in the last few years and sounded like they never missed a beat or note.
