Best Of 2008

Byron Baldwin

Staff Pick

Baldwin has graced Charlotte with his talent forever, but as with Hodges Taylor Gallery, this is also not a lifetime achievement award. Baldwin is the kind of master photographer who manages to traverse genres seamlessly, without playing to the crowd and without losing himself. There’s a piece of the artist in every portrait, landscape, dumpsite, shanty or chicken shack he’s ever photographed. He’s Charlotte’s hybrid cross between painter Edward Hopper and Alabama photographer William Christenberry. A jewel in the crown.
