Hughes’ status as “Best Kept Charlotte Secret” has been eighty-sixed with the release of A Love Extreme. Some worried that synths and programmed beats would dilute Hughes’ material, but they haven’t — a testimony to the strength of his songs, where light and dark balance comfortably, and everyone from The Fab Four and Ray Davies to Leonard Cohen influences the fun.
