Movie Missives

Novel ideas and a slew of locals

The Light Factory has come up with a novel idea -- in more ways than one. In conjunction with the annual Novello Festival and Charlotte Shout, the venue is sponsoring the Novel Concept Film Weekend, to be held Friday-Sunday, October 3-5, primarily at Spirit Square. The theme is "Celebrating Films That Are Adapted From Literary Tradition," and the festivities will begin Friday night (at a location TBA) with a party, a special screening, and various guest speakers. Then on Saturday starting at noon, Spirit Square's Duke Power Theater will host screenings of five movies based on classic texts: Macbeth (the Roman Polanski version), The Maltese Falcon, Devil In a Blue Dress, To Kill A Mockingbird and Drugstore Cowboy. Local film critics and academics will introduce the films and hold discussions afterward. Meanwhile, the site's Knight Gallery will present showings of movies made by local filmmakers: Jamal McLemore's Higher, Dorne Pentes' Lullaby, Endless Horizons' Emma's Gifts, Rick Fisher's Plastic and Mark Young's Phreaker (which will actually have its premiere September 4 as part of the Light Factory's Factory Films series). Finally, Sunday will witness the screenings of three popular family films all based on books -- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Harriet the Spy and Old Yeller -- as well as a closing BBQ party at 6:30pm. For more information, contact the Light Factory at 704-333-9755.

Charlotte Shout will also be involved with Cinefest, billed as "a celebration of the television, film and video industry in the Charlotte region." A fundraiser presented by the Charlotte Film & Video Association (proceeds go toward scholarships to the North Carolina School of the Arts), the event will be held Monday, September 29, through Saturday, October 4, at various locations. "Hands-on" film and video activities will take place at the corner of Trade and Tryon Streets from 11am-2pm weekdays, while local independent films will be screened Friday night and all day Saturday at different downtown locations. The event will conclude from 5-10pm Saturday at the corner of College and 8th Streets with a music concert and filmings of Survivor and American Idol takeoffs. All events are free, but copies of weekday activities will be available for purchase, and contributions from companies and individuals are encouraged. In addition, CFVA needs volunteers in all sorts of capacities (grips, secretaries, people with trucks or video equipment, etc.) to help out with the six-day festival. For more info on Cinefest, contact Peter Duggan at 704-378-4412 or Elyse A. Williams at 704-846-5801; to volunteer or contribute to the scholarship fund, contact Melvyn Wallace at 980-722-8422.

Clearly, Dennis Darrell isn't one to rest on his laurels. After taking two awards in CL's recent Best of Charlotte issue (Extreme Film Enthusiast and Best Film Series), the local movie maven is back at it, as his Reel Soul series presents "Nothing But Love For Ya" at 7pm and 9pm Friday, September 12, at the Afro-American Cultural Center. The evening will feature various short films all centering around the subject of l'amour. Admission is $7; for details, call 704-492-2519.

Entries are being accepted for the second annual Southern Exposure Film Forum, which will be held in late November. Films must be made by residents of North or South Carolina and must have been completed within the last year. Deadline for submissions is October 5. To obtain a full set of rules, e-mail Melvyn Wallace at melvynw@earthlink.net.
