Viva Chicken in the Elizabeth Neighborhood

I'm a huge fan of roasted chicken, so I've been dying to try the new-to-me Peruvian restaurant in the Elizabeth neighborhood, Viva Chicken.

The inside is as slick as a cookie cutter chain restaurant.

I visited on a random Wednesday night around 7 p.m. and was surprised to see that the restaurant, located at 1617 Elizabeth Ave., was very busy. I was also surprised to see that the interior was so modern and sleek. My husband and I immediately jumped on our smartphones to double-check that Viva Chicken isn't a chain. It's not.

1/4 Roasted Chicken with Cilantro Rice

Deciding what to order was easy. I went with the quarter roasted chicken and a side of cilantro rice and black beans. Bypassing the fried plantains wasn't easy, but I knew I could steal a few off my husband's plate (food sharing was a part of our pre-nuptial agreement).

The roasted chicken was incredibly moist and the skin had an herb rub that make the chicken extremely flavorful.

The Sauce

And if you're a fan of those lovely sauces you find at most Peruvian restaurants, you'll be glad to know that these are served at Viva Chicken. I can't quite put my finger on why these sauces are so incredibly delicious, but there's no doubt that they take roasted chicken to a whole new level.

If I have to point out anything negative about Viva Chicken, I have to say that I don't care for the metal wire baskets lined with wax paper. When the chicken is this incredibly moist (which is a very good thing), the juice soaks through the paper and makes a huge mess. I also wish they had real metal utensils. Plasticware just doesn't cut it when you're dealing with roasted chicken (no pun intended).
