Donations needed for Girl Talk Foundation's Prom Project

Posted By on Wed, Mar 16, 2011 at 11:34 AM

I remember my high school junior prom. I wore a lavender dress whose skirt puffed out Cinderella-ballgown-like with a sweetheart neckline and thin straps. Add silver heels, glitter adorning my shoulders, my hair done up in a French twist (which took hours, by the way, as a friend did it) and a French manicure, and I felt glamorous. And even though during dinner I would have to stick my cloth napkin under my legs because the netting beneath the skirt was itchy and annoying, it was a good night. (PS: I considered including a photo from that night in this post, but I just looked at one, and this was before I discovered the art of eyebrow waxing. Eeek!)

Ladies, if a touch of good nostalgia hits you when you think about your prom, then here's an organization you can get behind. Girl Talk Foundation is currently taking donations for Prom Project, a local endeavor to give Charlotte-area high school girls the chance to feel like a princess for one night.

On Saturday, April 2, girls will gather at ImaginOn from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to choose their prom dress, shoes and accessories, free of charge. In order to make that happen, though, donations are needed.

“With the average prom dress costing $300-$500 (that doesn’t include hair, nails, accessories, dinner, prom ticket), purchasing a prom dress in these economic times is a luxury,” Janine Davis, Founder and Executive Director of Girl Talk Foundation, Inc., said in a press release. “Girl Talk wants to help parents and empower girls through our Prom Project.”

The types of items needed include:

Gently worn dresses (prom, bridesmaids, cocktail and after five) All sizes (00 - 26)

Gently worn shoes (strappy sandals, pumps, mid to high heels)

Jewelry

Purses

Unused make-up and perfume

Party girls at Boutique on Feet

Posted By on Mon, Mar 14, 2011 at 2:04 PM

We have all been to kitchen parties and currently the trend of purse parties — but what is more fun than purses and kitchen stuff? A party with clothes, jewelry and purses, of course. I love a good kitchen gadget, but I really love shopping for my wardrobe. What girl doesn't? Look no further than Boutique on Feet.

Boutique on Feet

Decade-long friends Erica Gold and Shelley Fontana started the traveling and online shop Boutique on Feet back in September 2007 as a purse party after they had children and quit their day jobs. Their purse parties were so popular that requests came in to begin carrying more merchandise, such as clothes and accessories.

Boutique on Feet offers the perfect opportunity for a great girls night in, allowing you to shop and try on outfits in the comfort of your own home or office with your girlfriends — and without the sales pitch that you would typically get from other home parties. The girly and trendy pieces are versatile, and guess what? They are all under $50.

How cute are these new spring pieces?

Spring-Loo

Now, I bet you are wondering: how can I host my own party? It's easy. Grab about 12 or more girlfriends and some appetizers and drinks and the Erica and Shelley will set up their merchandise. It's as simple as that; there is no cost to host a party and the host will get free/discounted merchandise for just hosting. How great is that little perk?

I know that some of you ladies are thinking you just don't have the time to host a party, but there is a solution. Host an online party. An Evite and/or Facebook event page will be set up with details for your party. Your "guests" have one week to shop the store online with free shipping and a free gift w/ purchase.

To sign up to host a party with these fab ladies, visit Boutique on Feet.

New looks for spring at Petal

Posted By on Mon, Mar 14, 2011 at 1:50 PM

Today's forecast: 60+ degrees. Just the thought of that makes me squeal with glee and puts me in the mood to run out and grab a few new looks for spring. With so many prints and sheer fabrications, as is the current trend, Petal boutique is where you want to be. This fabulous boutique carries a number of great designers like Shoshanna, which has been a staple in this store since its opening in April 2008. Their newest designer collections from 81 Poppies and Bianca Coletti are some of the cutest dresses I've seen in awhile. Price points can range up to $300 but don't fret; this boutique has something for everyone. The front of the store houses all of the higher end designer wears, but if you mosey on to the back there's an entire section of pieces that are $100 and under. It's what the owner likes to call the "casual, grab and go" section of the store. Gotta love that!

Check out Petal in Dilworth located at 1315 East Blvd #180 and tell 'em T.Strong sent ya! Or shop online at www.shoppetal.com and be on the lookout for more news from Petal as their three- year anniversary is just around the corner and I'm sure they've got a little something up their very fashionable sleeve.

Revolution hosts anniversary sale

Posted By on Fri, Mar 11, 2011 at 5:09 PM

Now, I LOVE a sale ... but a 68 percent store-wide sale? Woooo...*fans-self and swoon*

Revolution, located uptown Charlotte in the Epicentre, is having a serious sale to celebrate its two-year anniversary. With so many designer labels to choose from, if you never thought you could afford it ... now is the time! I've taken a stroll through the store many times and found more favorites than my purse cares to remember — but at these prices, I'm sure I can afford just a wee bit more. Trust me, this store has it all. From hats to shoes to tees and accessories and looks for both men and women, Revolution is a “revolution” in and of itself!

The writings on the wall ...”For a good time, call Revolution”... or simply go by and check it out. Oh and don't miss to join the Revolution in-store celebration happening tomorrow night from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. See you there!

New arrivals at Vivian B Boutique

Posted By on Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 4:53 PM

Spring is in the air! Well ... maybe not today exactly, considering it's been raining all day — but what better day than this to shop?! I stopped by Vivian B Boutique in NoDa earlier today to chat with Kimberly the owner, and I caught her unpacking fabulous new spring pieces! I get so giddy when the seasons change because it presents the awesome opportunity to revamp your closet, throw some things out and purchase lots new items, and Vivian B is the perfect little spot to find something to brighten up this gloomy day.

Two new designers the boutique will be carrying this spring is Aryn K and Line & Dot. I simply fell in love with the crochet top by Line & Dot. Crochet, if you didn't know, will be a HUGE trend this spring and summer and this little shirt is a great way to introduce it into your wardrobe.

Jean Paul Gaultier's fall collection not age-specific, despite gray wigs

Posted By on Tue, Mar 8, 2011 at 10:38 AM

Ah, fashion week in Paris — is there anything more fabulous? It is a week filled with fashion shows in one of the world’s most beautiful cities. On Friday, March 5, Jean Paul Gaultier’s collection hit the runway with the appeal to women of a certain age as his models were all donned in wigs (mostly gray hair).

2

With these printed pant and skirt suits paired with silk tops, Gaultier shows that a woman of any age can get away with these looks. I know you may be thinking that these are meant for Grams — but do not be fooled, my friends! Take what you see here and create them as your own — the runway is meant to be inspiration. Mix the classic pieces with what is current age-appropriate.

1

Along with the pant suits (did you notice that the spring trend of wide legs will continue into the fall?), there were plenty of lush textures. The meticulously placed leather and rich suede. How could you not love the belted burnt orange coat paired with the chocolate leather skirt … minus the pants, would you wear a skirt over free-flowing wide leg pants?

Fashionable, fabulous, free: Neiman Marcus' Fashion Rules party

Posted By on Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 12:48 PM

Neiman Marcus at Southpark hosted its Fashion Rules party last night. While attendees sat sipping champagne, they also slobbered over fresh spring trends from Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch and Louboutin, among all the other fashion greats that Neiman Marcus is home to. The general consensus of the evening could be summed up with one reaction: “Why, yes, fashion does rule.”

If you needed a reminder on what’s in this spring, this was the event to attend. Shades of coral continued to stream down the runway, with pops of turquoise also present. Prints and florals were also popular, with delicate shades of purple, blue and yellow. Another big trend this spring? It’s white, of course ... and, it’s from head to toe. Now, that’s a no-brainer. Slip on some fitted white jeans, a flowy white blouse and complete the look with a pair of white wedges (or bone-colored shoes), and you’ll be sure to secure yourself a spot in the circle of fashion trust.

Untitled-1

One look that I hadn’t seen and would have preferred not to was the color-contrasting trend. What do you think about a bright coral blouse paired with hot pink pants? Terrible? I think so, too.

The guest of honor last night was Cookie Johnson, wife of Magic Johnson. She introduced her cool denim line, CJ by Cookie Johnson, available at Neiman Marcus. Her “frustration” with the fit of premium denim companies was the cause of this fashion revelation. Well, what’s a women to do when she can’t find the perfect pair of jeans? That’s right, Cookie decided to start her own denim line for women with “real bodies.” The line offers jeans, in all styles and colors, with a fitted waist and a little extra room in the thighs and behind. The models were proof that Cookie’s designs give some ladies a little somethin’ extra and help others to tone down what “their momma gave them.”

If you missed out on the Fashion Rules party, make sure to RSVP to the next Neiman Marcus event. It’s free, fashionable, and fabulous! What else could you ask for? (OK, yes a pair of Louboutin pumps would do … a girl can always dream!)

NoDa shop The Boulevard closing

Posted By on Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 10:41 AM

One of my most favorite locally owned shops, The Boulevard, announced on their Twitter stream today that they will be closing at the end of April.

Picture 1

I'm quite sad that this great shop — full of cute clothes, jewelry, art, hats and so much more — will no longer be within a block's walk of my home. The Boulevard has always been a staple retailer in NoDa (well, for me, anyway, since I've only lived in Charlotte for five years), and its presence will be greatly missed.

And considering the tweets I'm noticing from other folks reaching out to The Boulevard folks after they announced their closing, I'm not the only one who'll miss 'em.

Make your presence known: Hems & Hers online shop

Posted By on Thu, Mar 3, 2011 at 12:07 PM

Hems and Hers

Do you ever get tired of seeing the same look/outfit in every store? Do ever just crave an original piece? Then Hems & Hers is the online boutique for you. You will find affordable pieces (and we mean nothing priced over $80) that have a "preppy with a fun twist" sense of whimsy and charm. What is even better? Any piece can be customized and made to fit each customer's specific measurements. You certainly can’t get that at the mall.

Caroline Black, a North Carolina State University graduate and Charlotte local, started Hems & Hers in the summer of 2009 as result of searching for a creative outlet once entering the workforce. When she began searching for the right hobby to satisfy her creative cravings, she considered the immense sewing talent her mother possesses, and the fact that she grew up watching her create gorgeous frocks and modeling the finished products (with a matching hair bow). It seemed only natural to follow in her oh-so-adept footsteps.

"This business was born accidentally," Black said. "After I made my first dress (the Hannah dress, our most popular dress style) my friends began asking me to make pieces for them. The Belle skirt (the most popular skirt style) was created when my best friend Belle told me she was having a hard time finding a high-waisted, full skirt with pockets. Several friends followed suit, and I started selling them. At the same time, I had a personal blog with about 300 followers who were reading daily as I documented my journey with the sewing machine. When I launched the hobby as a business (basically when I announced its name, Hems & Hers), I had 300 customers almost instantly.”

4385891568_85d893a481

Black also noted that she is inspired by her eastern Tennessee roots, North Carolina surroundings, incredible Leave It To Beaver upbringing, deep-seeded faith, and the constant support and encouragement of my family and friends (furry and not). Her taste has never been subdued and that her eyes naturally gravitate toward vibrant colors and flirtatious and rich patterns — from paisleys to plaids to polka dots. Which is what originally drew me to her website — I was instantly in love.

If you are looking for original affordable pieces that scream sweet, feminine, effervescent, lively, flirty and quintessentially Southern, then you need to skip over to Hems & Hers. You will not be disappointed.
