The Hot Gates at Snug Harbor tonight (6/29/13)

Posted By on Sat, Jun 29, 2013 at 8:49 AM

Led by Charlotte-based musician Jason Scavone, The Hot Gates offers listeners an opportunity to experience the sounds of commercial pop/rock, with a sort of intimacy that's often lost in the mainstream. Unlike many of today's prominent pop artists, Scavone has managed not to restrict his craft to one particular niche within the genre. Rather, under The Hot Gates, Scavone experiments with Americana-esque guitar, infectious pop choruses and the classic notes of piano, to create something raw and new. By evading the likes of mainstream producers, Scavone maintains his authenticity on The Hot Gates' debut album, Ride it Out, released August of last year. Though you won't find Scavone's songs topping charts (yet), his talent for creating catchy, radio-friendly pop tracks has led to features on a Starbucks compilation CD and helped The Hot Gates gain notice within the Charlotte music scene. With Ancient Cities. $5. June 29, 10 p.m. Snug Harbor, 1228 Gordon St.

Charlotte's westside has always had somewhat of a bad reputation, though I've never understood why. Posted By on Fri, Jun 28, 2013 at 8:35 AM

Mannish Boys singer/guitarist Jacob Berger and Charlotte photographer/writer Daniel Coston have teamed up for a book that tells the story of the 1960s Charlotte, and regional, music scene.
