First Drip (6/25/15): Burning of black church said to be intentional

Posted By on Thu, Jun 25, 2015 at 11:55 AM

Fire officials have announced they believe the fire at Briar Creek Baptist Church early Wednesday morning was set intentionally. The three-alarm fire did $250,000 in damage, mostly to the educational and office buildings of the church. Law enforcement officials have activated a task force to investigate motives and suspects in the arson of the majority black church.

Duke Energy announced Tuesday that it plans to close 12 more coal ash ponds, which would leave the power utility with 12 remaining ponds of the 36 it once kept in North Carolina. Last year, state legislators gave Duke until 2029 to have all of its coal ash ponds closed. The remaining 12 ponds hold 70 percent of the 108 million tons of coal ash held in North Carolina ponds. Authorities and environmental groups have found groundwater contamination and hundreds of leaks surrounding the North Carolina ponds.

Residents all around Charlotte could see the smoke from a five-alarm fire that broke out at a recycling plant near Uptown on Wednesday afternoon. More than 150 firefighters responded to the fire, which investigators say started when a spark from a machine landed in a pile of paper and cardboard. More than a dozen firefighters were treated for heat-related injuries, and one was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Crews worked overnight to extinguish hotspots at the scene on Chamberlain Avenue.

Police believe an unknown suspect fired at least two gunshots at a bus full of summer school students on Wednesday afternoon. The bus driver said he heard gunshots shortly after leaving Olympic High School to drop students off, and found two bullet holes in the bus about an hour later after dropping off the last child. Police believe the shots were fired near Sandy Porter Road near West Arrowood Road.

The United States Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 to uphold federal subsidies for Obamacare on Thursday in a case that would have affected millions of Americans. The justices said the federal subsidies received by 8.7 million Americans, many of which couldn't afford health insurance without them, do not depend on the person's location and are constitutional. The decision in King v. Burwell is the second big win for Obamacare in the Supreme Court. In the decision, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, "Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not destroy them."

Food Lion's parent company, Delhaize Group, has agreed to a $29 billion merger with Dutch grocery company Royal Ahold NV. The merger will give the newly combined company nearly 500 stores in North Carolina. Royal Ahold was reportedly an early suitor to acquire Harris Teeter before that company was bought by The Kroger Co. in 2014.

A national backlash against the Confederate flag and any items depicting it following the shooting of nine black church members in Charleston last week has led N.C. Governor Pat McCrory to request lawmakers do something to stop the sale of Confederate flag specialty license plates. The Supreme Court ruled last week that Texas has the right to reject such specialty plates. The court ruled the license plates are government speech, and therefore can be controlled by each state however that state decides.

The town of Davidson has experienced just its second homicide in over a decade last night, according to police. Police said the fatal shooting, which happened just before 9 p.m. last night, was not a random act of violence. Davidson's last murder happened last July, and before that the town hadn't experienced a homicide in 10 years.

Posted By on Tue, Jun 23, 2015 at 12:09 PM

From caped crusaders to Frozen princesses, just about everything under the sun was represented at the annual Heroes Convention in Charlotte from June 19-21, 2015. We caught some of the action on Saturday, witnessing the massive cosplay photoshoot outside (including a wedding proposal), wondering what kind of wizard was hiding behind the curtain in the Stan Lee area and watching people sort through stacks of comic books and collectibles.

First Drip (6/23/15): Charlotte lands NBA All Star Game

Posted By on Tue, Jun 23, 2015 at 10:36 AM

Charlotte has reportedly won a bid to host the 2017 NBA All Star Game. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan are expected to formally announce the decision at a press conference today at 11 a.m. No specific dates have been set, but the game will most likely be held in mid-February 2017. Charlotte has not hosted the NBA All Star Game since 1991, when the game was held in the now-demoished Charlotte Coliseum.

The Charlotte City Council approved the second phase of the CityLYNX Gold Line at its regular meeting last night. With the first phase of construction set to open in July near Time Warner Cable Arena, the second phase will add 2.5 miles to the existing track and 11 more stops.

H. Allen Tate Jr., founder, chairman and CEO of real estate company Allen Tate Co. and prominent Charlotte business leader, died yesterday at the age of 84. Tate founded the company in 1957 as a one-man shop. It is now the largest residential real estate company in the Carolinas and one of the largest in the country.

A Burke County teen has been charged with trying to provide material support to ISIL, among other things, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Justin Sullivan, 19, of Morganton, was arrested on Friday and appeared in federal court yesterday. The criminal complaint against Sullivan states that he planned to obtain an assault rifle at the Hickory Gun Show and shoot a large amount of Americans in the name of ISIL.

Responding to pressure from around the country, S.C. Governor Nikki Haley called for the Confederate flag to be taken down from its spot on Statehouse grounds. Haley said of lawmakers choose not to debate taking the flag down this summer, she will call them back in for a special session. The flag became a lightning rod for activists and politicians alike after multiple photos of AME Emanuel Church-shooter Dylann Roof showed him waving it.

#BlackLivesMatter marchers speak outside of Confederate Museum

Photos from the peaceful Charleston protest

Posted By on Mon, Jun 22, 2015 at 1:36 PM

Although much of mainstream media focused on the "Unity Chain March" across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston on Sunday, a group of peaceful protesters saying they were the Charleston chapter of Black Lives Matter took to the streets on the previous day to honor the nine victims of the Emanuel AME Church shooting on Wednesday, June 17 and urge the public to speak against oppression.

Charlottean and Creative Loafing contributor Zach NeSmith drove down with a group of friends to join the marchers and took the following photos. According to NeSmith, the march lasted about a mile. The marchers started at the Wraggs Mall, passed AME Emanuel and came to a stop in front of the Confederate Museum.
