First Drip (6/22/15): Teenage camp counselor drowns in Lake Wylie

Posted By on Mon, Jun 22, 2015 at 10:21 AM

A 19-year-old counselor at Camp Thunderbird drowned in Lake Wylie overnight, after he reportedly jumped off the Buster Boyd Bridge with another counselor. Authorities say the two men jumped into the water around 2 a.m. this morning. One of the boys did not resurface, and his body was found by rescue crews after a two-hour search.

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced over the weekend that he and the Panthers organization are donating $100,000 to victims of last week's shooting in Charleston's Emanuel AME Church. The owner said $10,000 should be given to each of the nine victims' families and the remaining $10,000 should be given to the church as a memorial. Richardson said the money is being given to show the team's solidarity with the community.

Police do not know who was in a car that was struck by a train in southeast Charlotte this morning. Authorities believe the driver of the vehicle, which was struck on Thermal Road and knocked 100 yards down the track, fled the scene following the wreck.

A Wilkes County Sheriff's Deputy was shot this morning while investigating a shooting, according to Wilkes County EMS. The deputy was reportedly responding to a shots fired call on River Ridge Road in Jonesville. Two people had been shot in an altercation before the deputy arrived on scene. As of 8:30 a.m., reports said the suspect was on the loose but police "had an eye on him in the woods."

In an episode of the WTF Podcast with Marc Maron released on Monday morning, President Barack Obama spoke about guns and race in America in relation to the Charleston church shooting. Obama said America is not cured of racism and that societies can't "erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years ago" overnight. He also said he was "disgusted" with Congress for not acting to pass stricter gun control laws following the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. The podcast is available on iTunes.

First Drip (6/19/2015): Florist tip leads to Charleston shooter's capture

Posted By on Fri, Jun 19, 2015 at 10:13 AM

Investigators stated a tip from a local florist led them to capture Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof in Shelby on Wednesday. The woman said she recognized the suspect's car and haircut from police reports but was scared to call police until a friend convinced her. Roof has since confessed to killing nine people in a black church in Charleston on Tuesday night.

A daycare worker has been fired, but not charged, after leaving a 2-year-old in a car during North Carolina's harshest heat streak of the year. The girl was left in a van that belonged to Operation New Life Child Development Center in Chapel Hill for six hours, according to her mother. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in near-100-degree temperatures and garnered national media coverage. The girl is reportedly in good condition, but was dehydrated.

Authorities have re-opened Billy Graham Parkway after a car wreck took one person's life early this morning. The northbound lanes of the parkway between Tyvola Road and West Boulevard were closed for hours after a car ran off the road and burst into flames, taking the driver's life. The road re-opened at 7:30 a.m.

A 16-year-old boy whose left arm was amputated after being attacked by a shark off the North Carolina coast on Sunday has been released from the hospital, officials said. The boy was attacked about 200 yards off the beach at Oak Island. A 12-year-old girl who was also attacked nearby that day and also lost part of her left arm as a result is said to be in good condition.

North Carolina lawmakers have sent a bill to Gov. Pat McCrory's desk that would ease new voter identification laws. The bill outlines eight reasons for not having a photo ID that would allow voters falling within those boundaries to vote without one. The bill would also allow voters to use expired IDs.

First Drip (6/18/15): Police searching for suspect in Charleston shooting

Posted By on Thu, Jun 18, 2015 at 10:19 AM

A white male opened fire on a group of churchgoers in Charleston's oldest historical black church on Wednesday, killing nine of them. On Thursday, police said the man sat praying with the victims for an hour before opening fire. The suspect is still at large. Three men and six women were among the dead, including S.C. Sen. Clementa Pinckney, who was the pastor at Emanuel AME Episcopal Church.

A man was shot and killed in east Charlotte on Wednesday night. The shooting happened on Finchley Drive around 10:30 p.m. The victim, who hasn't been identified, was pronounced dead on scene and police have not given any suspect information.

Rescue workers airlifted a teenager to the hospital after two watercraft collided on Lake Norman on Wednesday. An 18-year-old man reportedly ran a jet ski into the back of another jet ski, injuring the 18-year-old male passenger. The jet ski that was hit was being driven by a girl under 18 years old. The injured male suffered a broken leg, but was airlifted to the hospital to check for internal injuries, rescue workers said.

The upcoming King v. Burwell decision in the United State Supreme Court could have a dire impact on North Carolinians, as 460,000 of them receive some subsidies in regards to their health insurance through the federal exchange, or Obamacare. If the Supreme Court decides that such subsidies are unconstitutional, it would reportedly cancel $1.7 billion in subsidies for North Carolina residents. The decision is expected in the coming weeks.

Duke Energy has reached an agreement with the Chatham County Board of Commissioners to pay the county up to $18 million for the right to store coal ash in old clay mines in Chatham County. Duke is being forced to remove coal ash from plants such as Riverbend in Mount Holly, and will wrap the ash in clay and plastic liners before placing it in clay mines in Sanford and Moncure. Residents and county commissioners had tried to fight the placement of the toxic coal ash in their county, but state regulators granted permits for the project two weeks ago.

The entire NFC South had a (kind of lame) Twitter war today

Posted By on Wed, Jun 17, 2015 at 3:18 PM

It all started with a Mean Girls reference.

At about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Twitter feed retweeted a meme from their playing grounds, Raymond James Stadium, and called the meme "fetch," a reference to a failed slang attempted by Lacey Chabert in the (great) 2004 flick Mean Girls.

The Bucs quite obviously left themselves open with this one, and social media managers from around the division quickly proved they didn't have much to do on a Wednesday, as the thread escalated into a GIF war between the Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers.
I obviously don't have enough to do either on this Wednesday afternoon, as I will lead you through a review of the GIF war that – spoiler alert – never really went anywhere.

The Falcons were the first to take the bait with a Rachel McAdams meme calling out the Bucs for trying to make "fetch" happen.

This is all fun and great. For innocent minds who like to think they're reading the message of some badass football players who are known for knocking the shit out of each other as opposed to some 20-something girl with a PR degree and a fresh memory of Mean Girls, it could be fun to think of them tweeting back and forth about a Lindsay Lohan vehicle. The Bucs were then quick to come back with a meme of Tina Fey from the same movie.

We're now in moving picture territory, and the addition of Tina Fey into any GIF or meme war is hard to build on. It's really only downhill from here. The Falcons try to come back with a Ace Ventura: Pet Detective meme that shows they have some sort of range into the history of comedy movies, if a 21-year-old movie counts as historical range.

I like that there is still some trash talking going on here. They're basically saying, "We just trolled you, you responded, that means we win." They threw shade and now they're throwing on the shades. The Bucs, yet again, show no originality by simply copying the movie Atlanta just referenced.

The Flowery Branch reference is to the small Georgia town in which the Falcons hold training camp, which seems to say they have a few more problems on the team than keeping the laces out. The Falcons respond with their own live video from training camp.

I'm not going to lie, I laughed at that. I'm not even sure why, but I'm pretty sure it was the point during which I decided I would write a blog post about this tomfoolery between the Panthers' rivals. The Bucs response:

Ok, maybe it didn't make sense, but Anchorman GIFS, like Anchorman jokes and Anchorman everything else, are played out and have run their course.

This is when everything falls apart. What the hell is going on here? If you didn't notice, that's the damn New Orleans Saints coming in from nowhere and putting up some GIF that makes no sense about babysitting Tommy from Rugrats?

Ok, mic drop from the Falcons, this thing seems to be over, right?

The Bucs have had their fun too. Let's go back to practice (or pretending the social media managers have real jobs).

WHAT?!?!? Why, Panthers? I love you and all, but why? Posting a random video that happened to go viral years ago with a Panthers jersey involved just because? You've got to get a new GIF.

That's a baseball team. This is just great. It has turned into the perfect metaphor for an actual argument that happens on Twitter and why it isn't actually a dialogue. Who asked the Rays to take take part in this and why are we now sharing cat videos?

Alright, I'm done. I have nothing left to say about this.
