Charlotte City Council voted on Monday to contribute $600,000 worth of police ad other public-safety services during the NBA All Star Game at Time Warner Cable Arena in 2017. More than half of the $6 million needed to host the game will come from the public sector. The city estimates the All Star Game will bring $60 million in visitor spending, based on games in New Orleans and Orlando.

The new chairman of the North Carolina GOP Hasan Harnett has taken to Twitter with memes connecting Hillary Clinton to the Ku Klux Klan. The memes Harnett posted include a picture of Hillary Clinton next to a picture of Klan members in front of a burning cross and says, "The KKK was created as the militant wing of the Democrat Party in order to fight Republican reconstruction." The KKK was attached to the Democratic Party in the beginning of the 20th century, but party lines have shifted greatly over the years and it would be "a monumental stretch" to tie the modern Democratic party to the KKK, said Michael Bitzer, political scientist with Catawba College.

Police have arrested three men in the June 23 killing of a Cornelius man in Davidson. The suspects, all between the ages of 25 and 28, have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jerry Kerns, Jr. The crime was just the second killing in Davidson in a decade. Family members said the killing stemmed from an argument between Kerns and another man.

College Street is currently closed between 8th and Phifer streets due to a natural gas leak, officials said. It is unclear how long the street will remain closed.

The Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board lifted its ban on gay adult leaders in the organization on Monday. The policy was approved in a 42-15 vote and will take effect immediately. Church-sponsored Boy Scout units will still hold the right to exclusion from the policy for religious reasons.
