Lunch Break (2/5/16): Active east Charlotte church member arrested for sex crimes against children ranging over three years

Posted By and on Fri, Feb 5, 2016 at 11:55 AM

Nicolas Vasquez
  • Nicolas Vasquez
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced yesterday that officers had arrested a 39-year-old man for sexually assaulting multiple children in Charlotte over a two-to-three-year span. According to a CMPD release, police received a tip on Wednesday that Nicolas Vasquez had been molesting children between 9 and 12 years old. Investigators reportedly found evidence backing up those allegations while serving a resulting search warrant and took Vasquez into custody. After interviewing him, police charged Vasquez with 18 counts of indecent liberties with a child, 11 counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and five counts of first-degree sex offense. He was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. It's unclear where these attacks took place, but the report notes that Vasquez was an active member at the Asamblea Apostolica Church in east Charlotte. (Ryan Pitkin)

Just as Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton was becoming visibly tired of the constant press conferences and media appearances in the lead-up to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California on Sunday, Snoop Dogg came through to loosen him up a bit. In the video below, Snoop surprises Newton as an honorary member of the media and asks him one of the more insightful questions we've heard Newton deal with yet. Watch:

A 12-count indictment was handed down yesterday against a Charlotte doctor who's been accused of sexual abuse against former patients. After Dr. Fidelis Edosomwan’s arrest over the accusations of two former patients, CMPD received over 40 additional reports — some up to eight years old — detailing how the doctor allegedly assaulted patients during examinations. Nine victim testimonies have lead to felony charges. Many of the assaults are believed to have occurred at AmeriCare Health on Milton Road in east Charlotte, but at least one took place at a clinic on West Sugar Creek Road. After a nearly month-long investigation into the shooting death of 22-year-old Brandon Reese, Lancaster police announced this morning that the death has been ruled accidental. According to police, Reese was attempting to purchase a gun last month and met with an unnamed gun owner in Lancaster, SC. The unnamed individual then challenged Reese to attempt “Russian Roulette,” and, if successful, he offered to give Reese the gun for free. Reese did not survive the "game."  The two friends who had accompanied Reese that night considered driving him to the hospital, but instead drove past it and abandoned his body and the vehicle on John Everall Road, where he was discovered. Police have not disclosed whether they plan to press charges in connection with Reese’s death, but their investigation has lead to the arrest of Lakendrick Wade, the man who they believe introduced Reese to the gun owner and who abandoned Reese’s body, on attempted murder charges in an unrelated shooting. (WSOC Staff)

A crooked gun dealer from Macon County was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison yesterday for selling multiple guns to a convicted felon in 2014, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. Investigators said Philip Elliot, owner of Mountain Top Coins, Guns & Ammo, not only sold multiple firearms to the known felon between March and July in 2014, but discussed selling him a rocket-propelled grenade launchers and told him he would buy stolen firearms and other stolen goods. Investigators seized 20 "off-the-books" guns from the store while serving a search warrant there. (Ryan Pitkin)

Lunch Break (2/4/16): Fans can drop 5K to stay at Panthers player's house while he's at Super Bowl

Posted By on Thu, Feb 4, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Carolina Panthers safety Roman Harper announced on Twitter last night that fans can watch him play in the Super Bowl from his couch...in his home. He has listed his Uptown condo for rent on Airbnb for $5,000 a night while he's in Santa Clara to play in the big game. Harper said the tenant would be given a signed football and all money from the stay would be donated to his foundation. (WSOC Staff)

Duke Energy has been draining water from its coal ash ponds into Mountain Island Lake in order to get to the coal ash below, according to a report from Fox46. Officials with Duke and the county say they're closely watching contaminant levels in Charlotte's largest drinking source to make sure the coal ash pond water is not affecting it negatively. Crews have been draining the ponds for three weeks and has until 2019 to had the coal ash removed completely. (Fox46 Staff)

Mayor Jennifer Roberts has placed the token "mayor's bet" with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock regarding the upcoming Super Bowl, stating that she will wear a Denver Broncos jersey if the Panthers lose and vice versa. Roberts has already announced that she will be sending a #1 Cam Newton jersey to Hancock in Denver in the event that the Panthers win. Roberts will head to San Francisco tomorrow and return on Monday. (Rad Berky, WCNC)

Two men were arrested after a carjacking in Uptown led to a high-speed car chase through the city this morning. Police said the men carjacked a Mercedes-Benz at gunpoint at around 2:30 a.m. near East Carson Street and then led police on a chase that reached 100 miles per hour. The men jumped out of the vehicle on Nobles Avenue in west Charlotte and were apprehended. One of the men reportedly yelled that he's innocent while he was being led to the car, so it's a surprise the police didn't let him go. The suspects, who have not yet been named, are facing charges of armed robbery, carjacking and weapon possession. (WBTV Web Staff)

A 16-year-old high school student in Union County was arrested after a revolver was found in his car following a fight that he was involved in yesterday, according to police. Officials learned there was a gun in Kenneth Shelby Rose's car after speaking with students involved with the fight at Forest Hills High School in Marshville, and he was charged with felony possession of a weapon on school property. Lunch Break (2/3/16): Group releases report detailing possibility of transitioning CMS to solar energy

Posted By and on Wed, Feb 3, 2016 at 11:30 AM

A group of advocates representing the Repower Our Schools coalition gathered in front of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center this morning to announce the release of an 88-page North Carolina Clean Energy Technology Center report that lays out a detailed plan to save Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools millions of dollars by transitioning to solar energy. The report provides a technical assessment showing how CMS could meet 100 percent of its electricity needs through on-site solar installations at schools, saving the school system more than $42 million over 25 years in the process. The current plan would be to implement a "partnership flip" with an outside investor, who could claim tax credits to lower the cost of the project, since the schools can't do so due to their nonprofit status. Advocates are calling for state legislators to change energy laws in North Carolina that currently prohibits third party energy sales (making it illegal for any solar project not owned by Duke Energy to sell energy directly to schools). Changing these laws and allowing schools to enter into a power purchase agreement with a third party owner could up the saving by 14 times, according to the report. In August 2015, Creative Loafing spoke with Hanna Mitchell of Repower our Schools about the group's plans. (Ryan Pitkin, CL)

A 12-year-old boy reported missing in west Charlotte yesterday has been found and reunited with his family, according to police. CMPD sent out a release just before 11 p.m. last night saying that Damarion Young had been last seen on Bromwich Drive in west Charlotte. The department sent out an update after 8 a.m. this morning stating that the boy had returned home. (Ryan Pitkin, CL)

Road work on Independence Boulevard has reportedly reached a stand-still after contractor DeVere Construction crews abandoned the project this week. The $51-million project, which has spanned three years, was originally projected to be completed by October 2016. Road crews have reportedly been instructed to “stop working,” and the main construction office on site has been left empty. NCDOT officials have warned the contractor that if work does not resume, the company will breach their contract. (Liz Foster, WSOC)

A $3-million judgement against North Carolina Department of Transportation for a 2009 car accident  that took the lives of three people was upheld by the North Carolina Court of Appeals in a 2-1 decision yesterday. The crash occurred on N.C. 49, when two cars were drag racing and struck another driver as she executed a left turn onto the road. Cynthia Furr and her 2-year old daughter were killed, as well as the 13-year-old passenger in one of the cars involved in the race. Families of the deceased argued in court that the accident occurred because NCDOT and Crescent Resources, a developer, had failed to install traffic lights that were part of the contracted expansion of N.C. 49 in 2006. NCDOT has the option to appeal the case further in the NC Supreme Court. (Steve Harrison, Charlotte Observer)

Why are Carolina Panthers shirts so terrible?

Posted By on Tue, Feb 2, 2016 at 4:02 PM

Before you start yelling "bandwagon," let me first state that I’ve been a fan of the Carolina Panthers since moving to North Carolina in the late 1990s. You know, back in the days of Steve Beuerlein and Muhsin “Moose” Muhammad. I can also spell and pronounce the last name of Tim Biakabutuka.

For some reason — probably lack of funds — I’ve never purchased a Carolina Panthers t-shirt. I’ve wanted one, but it just hasn’t happened. A few years ago, I went to my first regular season game and saw one I liked, but for some reason I didn’t pull the trigger.

Fast forward to this year and the excitement that’s been building around the Super Bowl-bound Panthers. I feel like it’s about time that I had some kind of clothing to show my support of the Cardiac Cats, so I started the great 2015-16 t-shirt search. So far, I’ve been completely unsuccessful.

Let me explain…

• I don’t want a shirt that has 2015 NFC Champions on it. In a year or two it’s going to look dated. And who cares if you won the NFC Championship if you can’t win the big game — which is all anyone cares about anyway.

• I don’t want a Super Bowl 50 t-shirt that has the Panthers and Broncos logos on it because a) I’m not a Broncos fan and b) I’m not attending the Super Bowl. Those shirts are going to look even worse if the Panthers lose on Sunday.

• I don’t want a player’s number on the shirt. I’m a huge fan of Cam Newton — because War Damn Eagle! — but in a few years, it could look like a Jake Delhomme jersey. Hey, you never know what the future holds. If a player gets traded or leaves the team, the shirt might just look silly.

• I don’t want a “Property of Carolina Panthers” shirt because it’s not 1986.

• I don’t want to pay $40 for a t-shirt — $40?!? — so let’s cut those out of the running, as well.

• I don’t want a wicking t-shirt because I want to wear it when I'm not working out.

* I'm glad they put "football" on the shirts so no one confuses it with the Panthers water polo team.

So, before you think I’m picky as hell or just plain grumpy, let me explain what I’d like. A Panthers logo on a cotton t-shirt. That’s it. The simple, black and blue Panther logo on a dark gray or black shirt. Hell, they could even throw a "Carolina" above it. Should be simple enough, right? Apparently not. I've looked all over and one is not to be found.

You would think that it would be the best seller? It’s timeless. It’s classic. It’s the team’s logo. No years, no gimmicks, no player names. Just the team's logo.

The only ones I can seem to find have silver, shimmering eyes and teeth or they have holes punched in them like swiss cheese. I’ve searched high and low — from WalMart and Target to the tents on street corners and the team store at the stadium. Maybe this is what I'm looking for — but it's only available in small?

So, what's the story? Why are the Carolina Panthers shirts so terrible?
