If you've never heard of singer/songwriter Anthony David, well, you've been missing out on some good music.
David has been kicking around the underground soul music scene for more than a decade and has released 3 CDs on his own and through small record labels. He started out playing in clubs in Atlanta with his best friend India.Arie (you may have heard of her) before she blew up.
Recently David signed with Universal, and he's set to drop his first major label release, Acey Ducey, on June 24.

The Deal: English pop singer hits new Charlotte venue with Aussie friends.
Speed Street, for lack of better terms, is interesting. They set up a bunch of turkey leg and fried food stands up in Uptown and have one big party that includes a varied roster concerts ranging from country to R&B to rock, NASCAR driver appearances and free shit. Kind of like a county fair.
We went to see Gary Allen down on one side of Uptown and in turn decided to have a redneck scavenger hunt.
I'm sick of this new trend of female British soul singers.
First it was Amy Winehouse. Now it's Duffy and Adele.
Sure these ladies are talented as hell, but the current spotlight that's being thrown on them makes it seem like the only talented female soul singers live in the United Kingdom. And that just ain't true.
Chris Rock will be performing at Ovens Auditorium on June 26.
Tickets go on sale on May 30 through livenation.com, ticketmaster and the box office.
They say, Get in the Game! but the EA Sports launch party for the 2009 NASCAR video game at Whisky River last night was not easy to get into.
My friend, Larken, who is like the mayor of Uptown Charlotte called me and asked me if I could get him a ticket because his favorite band, P.O.D., was performing and hed exhausted all his resources. Even the owner of BMG couldnt get him in. I didnt know there was a private party going on (perhaps why it was private), let alone have a ticket.
Lucky for Larken, I happened to have met someone on a production I worked on with Dale Earnhardt Jr. that works within PR for JR Motorsports that knows I write for Creative Loafing. I just sent him a text and I was in like Flynn.
BET announced the nominations for the 2008 award show that goes down June 24 in California. It looks like this year's going to be off the chain with Usher kicking off the live performances, and more by Mary J. Blige and Nelly. Nominations include trail-blazers like Snoop and Mary J. Blige and young-guns like T-Pain who stole five nominations, three of which are for the collaborations; Kiss, Kiss with Chris Brown, Good Life with Kanye West and Low with Flo Rida. Heavy-hitters gunning for Best Male are: Jay-Z , Common, Snoop, Kanye West and Common. Quincy Jones will receive the Humanitarian Award and Al Green will take home a Lifetime Achievement Award after decades of soul. Check out BET's Web site for a full list of nominations.
Local rockers Transmission Fields are trying to get a spot playing at this year's Lollapalooza.

I'd be willing to bet everything I have that David wins American Idol tonight...
On the one hand, you have David Cook The Mayor of Creepy Town. He's done everything via the Chris Daughtry playbook and is poised to take the title. While he looks like he'd be more comfortable sitting home playing Dungeons & Dragons, and about the furthest thing from a "rocker" image, the voters have him in the finals.
On the other side, you have David Archuleta Boy Wonder. Every song he sings sounds the same, and he looks like he'd be most comfortable singing with a '50s doo-wop band. Hey, David, don't look so surprised every time someone tells you you're doing well. The competition's almost over...you should be used to it already.
So, congratulations, David, on winning the biggest karaoke contest on tv. I'm sure lots of people will buy your album when it hits the streets in six-12 months. Until then, you'll be shacked up with the others on the Top 10 tour or whatever it's called.
I can't picture either one of these guys having a big Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood career. I suggest naming your debut album, Jump the Shark.
Just got word from the band's publicist that Flyleaf has canceled the remainder of their tour with Seether including the tour stop this week at Speed Street because of singer Lacey Mosley's illness. Mosley has swelling in her vocal chords...
