Introducing: Sol-Fusion

Denizens of Charlotte’s nightlife, it’s time to get excited: The funky, “intercontinental love fest” known as Sol-Fusion is coming to the Queen City on Saturday, June 27 at Kiss Ultra Lounge.

What exactly is Sol-Fusion? Well, the easy answer to that question is it’s a club/DJ/dance event that was birthed in Atlanta and has been THE party to attend there for years. But, for all the other details about the shindig, let’s hear what the guys behind Sol-Fusion Charlotte (which will feature sounds by DJ Kemit and DJ D.R.) — Atlanta-based promoter J. Carter and Charlotte-based promoter Mike Kitchen — have to say:

Creative Loafing: First thing I wanna know is, for people who have never been to Sol-Fusion, how would you describe it?

J. Carter: Hmmm … the best way to describe it is, if they remember that feeling when they were like in 11th and 12th grade in their friend’s parents’ basement and they would just let go and party like it was nobody’s business — I would explain it much, much like that. But I would also kind of describe it as more so a party for someone who would have anything from rock, classic-hip hop, reggae, funk, disco, [or] house, in their iPod … You know, so it’s a party for a more trained-ear individual.

Music Menu: Pattern Is Movement

Posted By on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 9:44 AM

TUESDAY, JUNE 23

Pattern Is Movement Most bands take their new compositions straight into the studio or onto the road merely for fine tuning; this Philly duo works inside-out on tour, discovering their songs' true nature on stage and then taking them into the body shop for detailing (local producer Scott Solter at their service, again). This fits the aptly named act to a tee, as PIM is all about puzzle-making – seemingly disparate sections put together to create its own logical framework. At one time a quintet, the pieces now consist mostly of banks of different keyboards, polyrhythmic percussion patterns, and vocals that would make good musical accompaniment to an Ionesco play. With Yardwork and Fluffy Lumbers. Milestone

Tweet of the Day — John Mayer

Posted By on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Today's Twitter post of the day goes to John Mayer in reference to Perez Hilton allegedly being attacked by Black Eyed Peas Will.i.am:

I love that @perezhilton uses his cellphone to log on to twitter to post a tweet to ask his followers to call the police for him.

Which he followed up with:

Last year P!nk kneed me in the nuts outside Chateau Marmont. I was pissing blood for days. Did I make a scene?

Thoughts on The Fillmore

Posted By on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 11:00 AM

So, Friday night was the opening of the new Fillmore here in Charlotte which means that both of the new venues are now open. I thought I'd share a few thoughts on both:

The Uptown Amphitheatre

I haven't been to the new amphitheatre yet, but have heard mixed reaction. Some people said it's awesome, some said it's too packed when the show is sold out. However, the biggest complaint was about beer prices. To these people I ask, "Have you been to Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre? The prices are the same there." A smaller venue doesn't mean smaller prices. Instead of people complaining about the prices, and then continuing to pay for beer at $8 and $11, why not stop buying it? If people stopped paying for it, they'd have to lower costs to sell it. You may complain, but if you keep buying it, you have nothing to complain about...

The Fillmore

I went to see Corey Smith on Friday night and was immediately impressed by the vibe of the location and the fact there isn't really a bad "seat" in the house. With four levels, you can see the stage from practically anywhere inside the venue. A 16-ounce beer costs $6, which is closer to the average price at any bar around town. The lighting and sound systems are fantastic and the air conditioning works beyond well. In fact, it was nearly freezing in there and the complaint I heard the most was that it was too cold.

Music Menu (6/21/09): Trevor Exter

Posted By on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 9:44 AM

SUNDAY, JUNE 21

Trevor Exter. Cellist and singer Exter concocts funky ditties. He plays the cello, well, more like picks, pulls, slaps and bends it like a guitar and what ensues is everything but classical. A session man who has played with varied artists spanning genres, Exter's music straddles the outer boundaries of twang, pop and rock. It's darn good when he's on and occasionally hokey when not. With Ben Henry and Erika Blatnik. Milestone

Music Menu: Stephen Warwick & the Secondhand Stories

Posted By on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 9:43 AM

SATURDAY, JUNE 20

Stephen Warwick & the Secondhand Stories. Warwick is one of the city's most underrated songwriters, but that's likely to change now that – if the rumors are true – the debut is done. There is, as someone somewhere wrote, something here for nearly everyone, from "singer-songwriter fans and indie aficionados" to "lap-top folkers and Americana geeks." If you prefer your footholds have actual names, imagine Elliot Smith in a better mood with some Stephen Merritt, Mark Linkous, Jeff Mangnum, Dylan and Skip James coursing through him, and you're in the diverse neighborhood. With another unsung local act, the Mike Strauss Band. The Evening Muse
