This week's new releases (2/15/2010)

Posted By on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 8:55 AM

It's a sparse week... I guess the holiday on Monday and Valentine's Day made people rethink new releases? I don't know... might as well pick up an old one in the meantime. It looks like things are slowing down for a few weeks ahead...

"We are the World" remake disappoints

Posted By on Mon, Feb 15, 2010 at 4:14 PM

If you've watched any of the coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver — especially the Opening Ceremonies — chances are you've seen the remake of "We Are the World" which was done in support of Haiti.

The video, kicks off at 1:30:

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

Now, where do I start with this... How about the beginning? You're trying to get donations for Haiti, and, most likely, you'd like those donations to come from people with money. So, to kick it off with Justin Beiber. Most adults are probably watching and saying, "Who is that girl with the boyish haircut?" Seriously, Justin Bieber to start it off?!?

Next up, you have Jennifer Hudson (I've never been a fan of her screaming), but regardless of her talents, she's paired up with Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls. Scherzinger had two successful albums with the PCD before leaving to release her solo album. You remember that solo album, right? It was released in... oh yeah, it was never released.

It picks up a little with a toned-down Jennifer Nettles and powerful Josh Groban... Tony Bennett, Mary J. Blige... and then you get Janet, er, Michael, er... one of the Jacksons. Barbra Striesand...

Um, Miley Cyrus? Really? Teens can't even pay their cell phone bills but you want them to donate to Haiti? And then we get Jamie Foxx and a screaming Wyclef Jean?

Adam Levine, Pink... Usher, Celine Dion... a quick guitar riff by Orianthi... Fergie sings... Toni Braxton...

Then it goes downhill again. Lil Wayne singing with Autotune - now it's a fucking joke, right? Jamie Foxx imitating Ray Charles again? Seriously, Jamie? You won an Oscar, let's move on...

Freakin' T-Pain?! OK... I give up. Seriously. People should donate to Haiti for the sake of the people in that country, but not because these people ruined a classic song from my youth.

I don't mind the breakdown with LL Cool J, Will.i.am, Kanye, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes.... I just thought that where the original used talented singers, this one failed... The original had Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson... It was bound not to meet such a high mark. They should have started fresh and done a new song.

UPDATE: Jay-Z doesn't like it either.

Zac Fowler & The Essentials (02/13/2010)

Posted By on Sat, Feb 13, 2010 at 9:00 AM

Zac Fowler & The Essentials Looking for pre-Valentine's Day plans? Look no further; this edgy boy band is worth lending an ear to. Their alternative-rock/pop sound is strong with most ballads flirting with the subject of love. For all of you anti-romantics who are groaning at the thought of going to see a band singing about romance, rest at ease – their sound leans more toward that of Sublime and Widespread Panic than 'NSYNC and the New Kids on the Block. The Money, Rock Hill (Nicole Pietrantonio)

It's Valentine's Day weekend and for those of us who don't give it shit, and/or are chasing shattered ass on Sunday, these video cards from North Carolina based comedy troupe, Green Bench, should help you tell that girl, exactly what you want to do. Whether it's something freaky or something with a friend... There's even an Auto-Tune ode for those of you looking to end that relationship before you're obligated to buy roses, candy and other crap that day. The songs are funny too.

Rap banned at Carnival?

Posted By on Fri, Feb 12, 2010 at 4:08 PM

Carnival is swiftly approaching in Brazil and a local mayor in the country is apparently wildin' before it even starts. Reuters reports that Mayor Jose Neto has banned rap and funk music that disrespects authority or incites violence from the festival that traditionally let's anything go, in favor of more traditional Brazilian music like Samba.

The punishment for playing some P-Funk or N.W.A. during Carnival in his town? Try arrest and up to six months in prison, if you refuse to turn it off.

Carvinal is a week long celebration and Brazil's most popular holiday. The party is so big that the government dishes out condoms and runs public service announcements to try and quell the spreads of AIDS.

Damn. Read more here.

In Concert: Andy the Doorbum & Holy Ghost Tent Revival (02/12/2010)

Posted By on Fri, Feb 12, 2010 at 8:39 AM

Andy the Doorbum Andy Fenstermaker celebrates five years of official Door Bum-dom this evening, and it is a deserving hallmark indeed. Last year's Art Is Shit blended ATD's briar-patch growl-and-holler into a hooch of illegal substance-fueled swamp rock and twisted hill-folk that careened between the profane and the holy, the deadly serious and the laugh-out-loud hilarious. Every time I play it I'm surprised anew, and when the 25th (!) track rolls around and the choir sweetly laments that "Rock 'n' Roll is dead," you certainly don't feel that way. Because in an era of post-everything hipster stances and multiculti plagiarism, Fenstermaker earns an accolade you just don't hear much anymore: He is an absolute original. With 25 Minutes to Go, Babyshaker and 2013 Wolves. Milestone (John Schacht)

Holy Ghost Tent Revival Stomp your feet and grab a gal. Greensboro's HGTR fuse a rousing rootsy concoction that could be at home at hoedowns, gambling parlors, gin joints, or at revivals. Weaving jug band shenanigans, country, bluegrass, carnival jazz and assorted roots threads, the six-piece group stirs up an American music treat. It's laid-back and raucous, oft within the same song. With And the Moneynotes. The Evening Muse (Samir Shukla)

A helluva Big Pun tribute

Posted By on Thu, Feb 11, 2010 at 1:35 PM

Sunday was the beginning of a somber week for hip-hop. Not only was it the 10th anniversary of Big Pun's death but it was also the birthday of legendary, but now deceased, hip-hop icon, J Dilla, who also passed away this week four years ago.

Tons of people kicked out tributes of their own but Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg (remember the "Throw Some Cheese" parody a few years ago?) has put together the most complete retrospective mix I've seen anywhere online.

Three parts, 75 tracks featuring everything from freestyles, singles, guest appearances, interviews, instrumentals and unreleased material. Who remembered Shaq having a record with Big Pun? I know I didn't! A thorough look at the man's work and his lyrical legacy. Kudos.
