Live review: Vivian Green

Vivian Green w/ Kameron Corvet

Dharma Lounge

April 1, 2010

The Deal: R&B songstress swings through the Queen City for an album release party.

The Good: The great thing about seeing Vivian Green live is hearing a voice that big come from a frame so small. The crowd seemed to respond well to her new material, much of which they'd never heard. She killed "Emotional Rollercoaster" even when it turned into a sing-a-long. The opening act Kameron Corvet overcame a rough crowd to end strong. He played his version of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway' turning audience topics into a freestyle about a threesome that was pretty dope to be acoustic. His originals got more love than his covers, I think he was surprised.

The Bad: Started nowhere near on time. The crowd was so loud and disrespectful the opening act worse than I can remember in recent memory. Overhearing women scream stories about shoes they want and trifling men to the person next to them, all the while Corvet is just trying to get his songs out. He even had to address the situation for a while. The faces of people who didn't realize Vivian Green was only doing a few songs (it was an album release party not a concert) was priceless. Needless to say some folks were pissed.

The Verdict: A nice weekend warm up for the professional and "bougie" types and a fitting appetizer for her real fans clamoring for the album, otherwise just a cool night out. Short, sweet but forgettable. Amazing to see the night and day difference between Dharma Lounge on Wednesday night for Le Bang vs. Thursday night.
