Hangout Festival is around the corner

Posted By on Mon, Apr 5, 2010 at 3:25 PM

We always like to give you options when it comes to summer music festivals. So, instead of heading west to Tennessee in June for Bonnaroo, maybe you'd rather head south to Florida for the Hangout Festival.

Taking place in Gulf Shores, Ala., on May 14-16, the Beach, Music & Art event will feature Zac Brown Band, Alison Krauss and Union Station feat. Jerry Douglas, The Black Crowes, Girl Talk, Orianthi and Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam among others on Friday.

On Saturday, bands include John Legend, The Flaming Lips, Gov't Mule, Jakob Dylan and Three Legs feat. Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Funky Meters, Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Ozomatli, The Whigs, Toubab Krewe and AA Bondy.

Sunday's music includes Trey Anastasio and TAB, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Ray LaMontagne, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Blind Boys of Alabama, Keller Williams, Matisyahu, Guster, Needtobreathe, OK GO, Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears, A.L.O. and Matt Hires.

Local Leak: The Flash Alchemy's Pour Me Poison

Posted By on Mon, Apr 5, 2010 at 12:00 PM

Anyone remotely affiliated with CL meets their fair share of up-and-coming artists, but I think most readers would be surprised at how few of them actually follow through on the opportunity to have their music reviewed and the possibility of having something written about them, whether it be good or bad. I'm not saying flood our inboxes but a simple, 'Hey, check this out' from artists around town every now and then is appreciated.

This Local Leak comes from a Charlotte band, The Flash Alchemy. Formerly A Flash of Alchemy, the band recently swapped names and a few members and now consists of Reid Clayton on vocals and rhythm guitar, Phillip Gripper on drums and backing vocals, Tom Maxim on lead guitar and Henry Killian on bass and keys. I met their drummer randomly bar-hopping and he shot me a link to their latest song and you know what, I appreciate the hustle to hit me up sooner, not 10 months later.

Pour Me Poison <-- Click to listen.

The first time I played "Pour Me Poison" I had to double check and make sure the breakup montage of a Rom Com wasn't on, because I totally felt like I was going to look up and see Ryan Reynolds walking by himself through Central Park, in the rain. Some rough vocals and sound but it's not bad, it actually made me think of The Fray.

You can check these guys them out live on April 16 at the Salvador Deli Gallery Crawl in NoDa and April 21 at Dharma Lounge with Cement Stars and April 25 at The Milestone with La Strada.

Leave some feedback and if you're a local band, don't be shy, send some NEW links this way (especially if you're rap, soul or R&B, since that's kinda my lane). Don't get discouraged or send pissy e-mails if we don't get around to your music as speedy as you'd like either. Things get kinda hectic.

10-in-10 CD reviews

Posted By on Fri, Apr 2, 2010 at 10:58 AM

Each Friday, we bring you reviews of 10 recently released CDs done in 10 words each:

Seasick Steve Man from Another Time — 65-year-old offers up 12 scrappy-style blues tunes.

Helloween Unarmed — Best? Don’t even think I’d call them one-hit wonders.

Annuals Sweet Sister — Raleigh band’s five-song EP continues to show their talent.

Scott McKeon Trouble — Great blues sound for 23, vocals sound a bit young.

The Ravenna Colt Slight Spell — Former My Morning Jacket guitarist releases his debut solo album. (At Evening Muse on April 15.)

Making Movies In Deo Speramus — Latin-spiced pop rock has some English lyrics, some Spanish.

Wild Bores We Think Alike — Power-pop album from Nashville based band was just ok.

The Prices The Awesomeness — Singer kinda sounds like Gwen Stefani, lacks the same energy.

Gorillaz Plastic Beach — Numerous guests help to keep band’s sound diverse, increasingly unique.

Disturbed The Sickness 10th Anniversary — B-sides and new artwork added to band’s album reissue.

Lollapalooza slowly revealing band names

Posted By on Thu, Apr 1, 2010 at 2:43 PM

Much like Bonnaroo released their band names one at a time, the folks at Lollapalooza are releasing band names in a "Wheel of Fortune" style — one letter at a time.

They released "O" first and today is "R."

Judging by the position of letters in the lineup, it looks like some of the bands performing this year are:

Soundgarden

Green Day

Lady Gaga

Arcade Fire

The Strokes

Phoenix

Wolfmother

Spoon

Chromeo

Hot Chip

Gogol Bordello

The National

Social Distortion

UFC event rocks its way into Charlotte

Posted By on Thu, Apr 1, 2010 at 11:05 AM

For the first time since 1995, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) brought an event to Charlotte. Yep, the last time they were in town, it was a little more lawless inside the octagon.

Anyway, I went over to Bojangles Coliseum last night for my first opportunity to see a live fight — Fight Night Live. More on that side of it in a moment. What I noticed during the four-and-a-half hours that I was there is that music plays a big part of events like this.

Fighters select a variety of music for their entrances — rock, hip-hop and metal are definitely the favorites.
