Video: Asher Roth's "Muddy Swim Trunks"

Posted By on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 10:17 AM

OK GO may have helped spawn the epidemic but we've seen the one shot, cleverly done videos pop up more and more as artists vie for viral video fame.

Add Asher Roth to the mix.

The rapper whose laid back flow and campus-y lyrics made him a college tour all-star a few years ago is out to prove he's can spit about more than just a weed, women and textbooks. His new video for "Muddy Swim Trunks" (directed by BB Gun) from his mixtape, Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry, begins with Roth awaking in the bread aisle from his debut album cover, hitting a blunt from a minotaur and scooping a duck and wandering a grocery store getting dressed before sitting down for some... you guessed it, seared foie gras. Would've been nice to see Gilbert Arenas or Darrelle Revis make a cameo seeing as Gilbert's been suspended since that whole gun thing and Revis' season is over.

My only question, where are all the hot, nude Asian chicks in my Harris-Teeter? NSFW.

10-in-10 CD reviews

Posted By on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 10:12 AM

Each Friday, we bring you 10 CD reviews done in 10 words each:

Hoodoo Gurus Purity of Essence — Nearly 30 years after forming, ninth album has hook-y rock.

Sweethead Sweethead — Troy Van Leeuwen of QOTSA offers new project. It’s ok.

Keane Night Train — UK band’s fourth album offers eight tracks in 32 minutes.

Grupo Fantasma El Existential — 10 years in, Latin group still brings the energy out.

Elizabeth Cook Welder — Country singer’s fifth album sounds like an adolescent Dolly Parton.

Sage Francis Li(f)e — Social commentary, unique style help set his hip-hop apart.

Jennie Arnau Chasing Giants — S.C. born roots rocker has some country, bluegrass hints.

Boondox South of Hell — I think I’ve finally found the poor man’s Kid Rock…

Lisa Bell Dancing on the Moon — Singer mixes up jazz, soul, blues, funk and folk styles.

Everest On Approach — L.A. band’s sophomore album combines atmospheric elements with pop sound.

CD Review: B.o.B's The Adventures of Bobby Ray

Posted By on Thu, May 13, 2010 at 4:38 PM

bob-adventures-bobby-ray

The Deal: ATL's next big thing drops long awaited and critically applauded, debut album.

The Good: B.o.B is one of only a handful of artists that possess the ability to sound completely different on every song. The fact that you can have a song like "Bet I" with T.I. and Playboy Tre, work for the streets, then kick out "Nothin' On You" with Bruno Mars and "Airplanes" with Hayley Williams of Paramore that works mainstream demos takes a real talent and versatility. Add "Airplanes, Pt. II" with Eminem sounding like the Eminem we know and love and it's bulletproof. "Past My Shades" with Lupe Fiasco and "Fame" are some of my favorite cuts on the album. Expect to hear "Lovelier Than You" in a romantic comedy near you.

The Bad: Am I the only one that noticed lots of previous hits missing? Where's "Haterz Everywhere" and "I'll Be In The Sky"? Sure, they both dropped over a year ago and have long since outlived their radio rotation but they were his biggest songs and are nowhere to be found (even on the deluxe edition I have). Not really feeling "The Kids" with Janelle Monae — I think I expected more.

The Verdict: The Adventures of Bobby Ray may go down as a blueprint for crossover success. As far as a debut goes, it's beyond solid. Who knows what direction he'll go in next.

Atlantic; Release date: April 27, 2010.
