The name conundrum

Posted By on Wed, Aug 11, 2010 at 3:06 PM

For years, I’ve had to sheepishly admit to past girlfriends (and those awkward ice breaker groups) that my name is a compromise between Malcolm Jamal, like Malcolm-Jamal Warner, then Theo from The Cosby Show, and Michael Jordan. I guess it’s obvious who won.

That pales in comparison to some of my family members names.

I have cousins named after celebrities as well, but their names aren’t nearly as normal as Mike. There’s my cousin Beyoncé, who can’t sing and doesn’t seem destined for a career in show business. Her mom thought the name Beyoncé was cute and ironically, I never knew her real name until I randomly asked one day what Bouncy’s real name was. Needless to say there was a spit-take involved.

Little River Band, Erika Blatnik tonight (August 11)

Posted By on Wed, Aug 11, 2010 at 10:16 AM

LITTLE RIVER BAND Remember "Cool Change"? "Reminiscing"? If you're of a certain age — or have ever perused Jack FM on a road trip — your answer is undoubtedly in the affirmative. But concertgoer beware: this LRB is only tangentially — and then some — related to the original sultans of soft rock. Founding members Beeb Birtles, Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble lost the rights to LRB moniker to a former member, Stephen Housden, who has apparently since left the band himself, leaving what appears to be ZERO original members. Speaking of former members, the "Little" River Band puts P-funk to shame, counting more than 30 (!). As such, you might as well get together with four or five of your closest friends and hit the local karaoke bar, if authenticity (or just plain reminisciiiin') is what you're after. $35-$45. Old Town Amphitheater at City Hall Black Street, Rock Hill, S.C. (Timothy C. Davis)

ERIKA BLATNIK It's tough to face the truth, but it's a fact of life that people have to move on sometimes. That's why it pains us to see Erika Blatnik leaving the Q.C. Her last show with The Lights, Fluorescent is on the 28th, but tonight's show is her last scheduled solo show. Find out why we gave her the award for Best Female Vocalist in 2007. She'll be missed, but will always be welcomed back. Opening for Dead Rabbits and Window God. $5, Snug Harbor, www.snugrock.com (Jeff Hahne)

Live review: Lollapalooza 2010 (Sunday)

Lollapalooza 2010

Chicago's Grant Park

Aug. 8, 2010

Photos coming soon!

My Sunday got started late at Lollpalooza in Chicago... At 3 p.m. I checked out the unique brand of rock put forth by Minus the Bear. Still not sure what to think of these guys, either.

Next, it was off to the Kidsapalooza stage for a few quick acts. First up was Peter DiStefano — the former guitar player for Porno for Pyros played a handful of songs and got downright silly by slapping and hitting his guitar — you could tell he was trying to be a little over the top to entertain the kids.

After that was a three-song set by thenewno2, featuring Dhani Harrison. The band's set included a new song they haven't played live before.

Finally, Perry Farrell came out to join thenewno2, along with DiStefano for two songs — "Pets" and a cover of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane." Farrell was all smiles as he almost fell of the stage at one point and tried to watch his language around the kids.

Goo Goo Dolls tonight (August 10)

Posted By on Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 11:31 AM

GOO GOO DOLLS It's always funny, when you look back at the Goo Goo Dolls career, that the band started out with some pretty strong hard rock and punk roots, yet still developed into a commercial rock juggernaut. The band has been around for 24 years now but is still known most readily by its super-single, "Iris." Here's to hoping they remember their punk beginnings and refuse to play the song live. Yeah ... it'll never happen. The band's latest album, Something for the Rest of Us, is due in late August. With Switchfoot and Spill Canvas. $29.50-$55, Road Runner Mobile Amphitheatre, www.livenation.com

Archeology tonight (August 9)

Posted By on Mon, Aug 9, 2010 at 9:29 AM

ARCHEOLOGY Think radio-friendly pop songs with well-harmonized melodies where the chorus is repeated several times to sear it onto your brain so you don't forget it anytime soon. A formula for success in today's music market, that's what the Portland, Ore., band has. Dare I say their cute little jingles are "Beatle-esque", harking back sounds from the super-group in the early '60s. The female demographic will certainly be entertained by their good looks and soft-spoken lines of love and togetherness. Interestingly enough, the band got its name from co-founders Jason Davis and Daniel Walker love for the science and actually met on an archaeological dig. With Standard Fare and The Flash Alchemy. Lollapalooza 2010

Grant Park, Chicago

Day two of Lollapalooza got started, for me, around 1:45 p.m. with a set by Blues Traveler. The blues-rock jam band kicked off its set with "Runaround" before going into a cover of Sublime's "What I Got," both of which quickly won over the crowd.

Dylan Gilbert tonight (August 8)

Posted By on Sun, Aug 8, 2010 at 9:29 AM

DYLAN GILBERT The local music machine known as Dylan Gilbert doesn't find much time to take it easy. Seems like every time we look, there's a new CD being released. His latest, Pangaea, came out on June 29. Gilbert's known for poetic songwriting and fringe performing that takes his folk rock to the edge, sometimes playing the part of a mad scientist working the pedals with a frenzy. He's got a new backing band, The Over Easy Breakfast Machine, which could help bring his songs into focus. With Lucky Five, The Have and the Have Nots, Linus van Pelt. Free for 21 and up, $3 for 18-20, Snug Harbor, www.snugrock.com

Live review: Lollapalooza Friday (8/6/2010)

Posted By on Sat, Aug 7, 2010 at 12:04 PM

Since 2005, Lollapalooza has been located in the heart of Chicago, taking over Grant Park for weekends full of music.

The day got started early, as B.O.B. kicked things off at 11:30 a.m. The backdrop of the Chicago skyline made for fantastic views throughout the day as more and more people filed in — a good number of them dressed in their favorite drag, leather, lace and wigs for the night's Lady Gaga performance.

LollaDay1 (1)

The Ettes hit the BMI stage around 12:30 for their brand of what I'd call indie punk. Definitely a group I'd be interested in seeing again.
