Simplified Acoustic tonight (Sept. 14)

Posted By on Tue, Sep 14, 2010 at 9:01 AM

SIMPLIFIED With songs like "High Everyday," this local Charlotte band has good reason to sing. Aside from a loyal fan base, the band — comprised of Clee Laster, Chris Sheridan, Tim Lail and Chris Lych — has just kicked off its annual Labor Day tour and promises an awesome show for anyone into guitar with a funk twist. Seamlessly blending melodic lyrics with syncopated beats, Simplified will satisfy even the deepest musical cravings. Free, The Rusty Rudder, www.therustyrudder.net (Debra Renee Seth)

Remembering Tupac Shakur

Posted By on Mon, Sep 13, 2010 at 3:38 PM

With today marking the 14th anniversary of his death at age 25, after battling six days to survive gunshot wounds sustained on the strip in Las Vegas, people all over the World are remembering Tupac Shakur.

Tribute stories, blog posts and tweets have been circulating since midnight with people reflecting on his impact and relevancy over a decade later. Others waxed poetic on where they were or how old they were when Pac died (I was 2 weeks shy of 10 years old + in the barber shop when I found out) and have been sharing their favorite songs of his.

Just this weekend, I had a drunk friend of mine claim to have studied this for three years and lay out his 2Pac conspiracy theory. Using the uncut version of 2Pac's "Made N*ggaz" video. He pointed out the depiction of Biggie Smalls' death, the fact that all of Shakur's iconic tattoos were gone in the video (I argued they were covered up) and the existence of a team of Federal investigators to track down where he really is. Obviously, I'm not one for conspiracy theories.

Local Leak: In Studio with Jeff Lucky

Posted By on Mon, Sep 13, 2010 at 2:42 PM

Making a left into a dimly-lit industrial area just past Tremont Music Hall late on a Friday night, you'd probably expect to stumble upon a B&E, much less a recording session.

Checking the address twice, I parked outside Charles Holloman Productions and after getting buzzed into the building, I'm instantly blown away by the inside. It's pretty lush, no way you could tell from the outside. Walking past two women doing vocal warm-ups in the hallway, one of them points me towards the studio, "Jeff's in there."

Charlotte native and indie hip-hop performer, Jeff Lucky, is back in town from L.A., where he moved a few years ago, to wrap up production on his next album, Soul Motivation, due out later this year on SummerSoul Records.

Recapping the MTV Video Music Awards

Posted By on Mon, Sep 13, 2010 at 2:09 PM

Did you catch the MTV Video Music Awards last night? I did, regretfully.

It's almost disappointing that pretty much the same five artists are nominated for every award and they've become so predictable in their monotony that it's hardly even entertainment anymore.

I'm sure some tuned in just to see what Lady Gaga would wear — pretty much a different outfit each time she was on camera, including a meat dress.

Seriously... it's sad. Have you read this article from the Sunday Times about Lady Gaga? Sure is interesting... So is this one.

Anyway, back to the awards. I wasn't impressed. Florence and the Machine and Eminem held their own against a sea of crap. Why would they let Drake hack up a song over the blissful vocals of Mary J. Blige? Why in the world would they let Justin Bieber sing or lip synch and dance around? Taylor Swift showcased a more mature side while Kanye West proved he's still a douchebag, asshole and jerk off.

Chelsea Handler did her best to have fun, but her jokes were weak, no one cares about her sidekick and it was at times hard to watch — especially as she jumped in the tub with the moronic Jersey Shore cast. Aziz Ansari did the painful intro to Kanye West's performance. Who thought that was funny in any way?

Of course Lady Gaga won a bunch of awards because that's who all of the sheep are following these days. Is it odd to anyone else that she calls her fans "little monsters"? Too often when I watch her costumes and hear her talking it comes across as too much of an act instead of something honest and dedicated.

Sharon Van Etten, Public Enemy tonight (Sept. 12)

Posted By on Sun, Sep 12, 2010 at 8:03 AM

SHARON VAN ETTEN Throwing a singer-songwriter label on someone doesn't tell you much, and if you add in folk, it can cause people to run for the hills of mediocrity. Van Etten showcases a deeper emotion and there's Brooklyn grit evident in her smoky vocals. Sure, this one could have been at the Muse, but something feels right about it being held within the graffiti walls of The Milestone. With Marissa Nadler and Second Hand Stories. $8-$12, The Milestone, www.themilestoneclub.com (Jeff Hahne)

PUBLIC ENEMY Few rap groups have the cultural impact of PE's movement at its strongest. Even with Flavor Flav becoming famous for reality show shenanigans and Chuck D doing talk radio, their music is undeniably influential to an entire generation of hip-hop heads. Believe this hype. Fucked Up, The Banned & Crew Grrl Order are also on the bill. $30-$35. Amos' Southend, www.amossouthend.com (Mike McCray)

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre

Sept. 10, 2010

Kings30910

The Deal: Kings of Leon return to Charlotte and bring along solid opening acts.

The Good: Last time around, Kings of Leon couldn't sell out the Bojangles Coliseum, but this time Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre was packed with KoL fans and those who came out to see the openers, as well.

Wakey! Wakey! and Richard Buckner play tonight (Sept. 11)

Posted By on Sat, Sep 11, 2010 at 9:02 AM

WAKEY! WAKEY! Give Mike Grubbs (piano and vocals) his due for concocting rather intriguing pop. W!W! is essentially Grubbs' muse while the band runs the gamut of cohesive, happy piano-pop. Sure he rubs shoulders with Joe Jackson and Ben Folds on his way to compositional props, but Grubbs has the talent and the moxie to pull off his own stash of original, memorable tunes. With Matt Hires and Brandon Kirkley & The Firecrackers. $8-$10, Tremont Music Hall, www.tremontmusichall.com (Samir Shukla)

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

RICHARD BUCKNER For the uninitiated, Buckner's strained, bear-like yowl is hard to mistake — like Jay Farrar of Son Volt, it's as much an instrument as the guitars and pedal steel. Like a truck, it might not have much high end, but the torque it creates is considerable. Sometimes Buckner's lyricism tends toward the more abstract, and one wonders why he just doesn't hit the feeling head on. Then you hear him sing, and you know. It's like hunting deer with a bazooka. With Darden Smith, Dean Fields. $12, 10:30 p.m., The Evening Muse, www.theeveningmuse.com (Timothy C. Davis)
