JJ Grey "cancels" show

Posted By on Fri, Oct 22, 2010 at 4:09 PM

If you were at the Visulite Theatre last night, you probably heard or noticed that JJ Grey never made it to the stage...

Apparently, he got food poisoning after sound check yesterday — and we can only hope it wasn't from a local eating establishment.

The good news was that Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights rocked it out for about an hour and then Greyhound took the stage for a set.

It looked like most people in the crowd didn't mind and stuck around for a good while.

Let's hope JJ makes a quick recovery and returns to town soon.

10-in-10 CD reviews

Posted By on Fri, Oct 22, 2010 at 12:04 PM

Each Friday, we review 10 recently released CDs in 10 words each:

Random Touch Reverberating Apparatus — Trio creates a lot of spacy, off-tempo atmospheric sounds.

Bangtower Casting Shadows — Instrumental power prog trio features Brand X bassist Percy Jones.

ABK Medicine Bag — Another bad rapper in clown makeup from the ICP gang.

Glee Rocky Horror Show — More shitty cover songs from that horribly annoying television show.

Big Time Rush BTR — Nickelodeon show stars release debut album of cheesy pop rock.

Majeure Timespan — Zombi drummer’s debut uses layers of synthesizers along with drums.

Cloud Cult Light Chasers — Band works on building upon the typical indie rock sound.

The Honored Guests Please Try Again — Chapel Hill band creates some solid Flaming Lips-like soundscapes.

Brooke Fraser Flags — New Zealand singer’s third album is enjoyable, solid pop-folk.

Old 97s The Grand Theatre — Band’s eighth album has upbeat country rock rhythms… not bad.

Michael Holland and Junior Astronomers tonight (Oct. 22)

Posted By on Fri, Oct 22, 2010 at 8:20 AM

MICHAEL HOLLAND Holland, here without his newish Occoneechee Band, and who, along with his brother Mark, fronted the band Jennyanykind, is a subtle live performer. His nuanced twang and guitar phrasings sometimes take a little while to snake their way into your head. But once there, it sticks: the spark and rattle and hiss of primitive rough-hewn folk (think Harry Smith's Anthology) underscored by lots of non-linear, almost dub-like guitar work. Recommended. With Former Squirrel Nut Zipper Katherine Whelan and others. $8, The Evening Muse, www.theeveningmuse.com (Timothy C. Davis)

JUNIOR ASTRONOMERS Celebrate the birthdays of Terrence and Phillip from the Charlotte quintet Junior Astronomers with a night full of music. Along with some regional music, the indie, emotion-driven rock of Junior Astronomers will be joined by the experimental style of Harvard. Get a preview of Junior Astronomers via a free four-song EP available online at the band's bandcamp.com site. Free. With Resister, Hammer No More the Fingers and Death On Two Wheels. 9 p.m. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com (Jeff Hahne)

Posted By on Wed, Oct 20, 2010 at 10:36 AM

Here's a quick little video — a look back at last weekend's Homebrew release party at the Neighborhood Theatre. We gave out 600 CDs (for free) to all of those in attendance. The party included performances by Bubonik Funk, Electric Coma, Mike Strauss Band, Matrimony, The Isaac Spiveys, Wiggle Wagons and Grown Up Avenger Stuff.

Thanks to all that came out!

Local Leak: Dow Jones

Posted By on Tue, Oct 19, 2010 at 2:48 PM

img_5578.webp

We haven't had a Local Leak for you in a while but today we've got new music from Charlotte MC, Dow Jones.

The Black Flag Records artist and Queen City opening act staple is hard at work on his upcoming EP, Lyrics and Liquor, but dropped off these appetizer tracks for fans who haven't heard anything new from him in a while.

Gotta love local music that doesn't sound local. Enjoy.

Video: Rapsody's "Honda Accord Music"

Posted By on Mon, Oct 18, 2010 at 9:13 PM

Rick Ross has Maybach Music but North Carolina MC, Rapsody, is repping for those of us who can only afford a Honda Accord.

The Raleigh-Durham product dropped a video her single, "Honda Accord Music," directed by Kenneth Price from Price Films and produced by 9th Wonder, which featured a guest appearance by NFL wide receiver and former N.C. State star Torry Holt. What more can be said for this joint other than the chorus, "can't afford Maybach's, I'm an Accord!"

Been there sister.

3OH!3, HelloGoodbye, Down with Webster tonight (Oct. 18)

Posted By on Mon, Oct 18, 2010 at 8:33 AM

3OH!3 Three albums later, the electro-hop duo is still around ... I never thought it would last this long, but it has. The group makes mildly cheesy pop songs that feature people like Ke$ha and Katy Perry. Though they met in physics class, this sure isn't rocket science they're collaborating on. It's fun, but I can't say there's much longevity. With HelloGoodbye, Down with Webster. $20-$23, Amos' Southend, www.amossouthend.com
