Live review: Matrimony

Matrimony

Visulite Theatre

March 4, 2011

The Deal: Charlotte's Matrimony performs at the Visulite Theatre for small but enthusiastic crowd.

Matrimony1

The Good: Charlotte's Matrimony may be familiar to some as the husband and wife duo of Jimmy Brown and Ashlee Hardee Brown, but the group's complete lineup is one that adds depth and energy not heard on the band's debut EP. Bassist Shae Wooten, banjo/multi-instrumentalist Jordan Hardee (formerly of the Paper Tongues) and drummer Alex have completed the group's sound.

Matrimony3

Those only familiar with the seven songs from its debut will not only find new life by the addition of the newer members, but also hear songs not on the album that are just as strong as the initial offerings. The energy and emotion of "Flee or Fight" is matched by the newer song, and show closer, "Obey Your Guns" — both personal favorites.

The harmonies from Jimmy and Ashlee aren't conventional in the sense you might expect from a family bond, but those of a married couple that offer perfect compliment. The sweet and soothing tone of Ashlee is the right highlight to the straight-forward style of Jimmy. The band's music also takes a different characteristic with the use of keyboard and banjo, layering what might be a traditional folk sound that takes rock hints and finds sporadic Irish inspiration from Belfast-native Jimmy.

Matrimony2

Not too long ago, the band was at Snug Harbor and it was easy to see how, in the last few weeks, the band has bonded and continues to grow tighter, more relaxed and united in its performances. Whether soft and full of emotion or strong-handed and full of bite, the energy and love of the music shines through with every word and note.

The Bad: Only that more people weren't there on a Friday night.

The Verdict: Talented songwriting, strong lyrical abilities, great energy from a quintet that grows stronger with each performance... if you're curious about which Charlotte band will be the next to hit it big, I'd easily wager on Matrimony. The band is garnering praise from every tour stop and is hitting the road this week to venture to SXSW.

Solid Gold Mondays, Cursive tonight (3/7/11)

Posted By on Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 8:46 AM

Solid Gold Mondays Imagine a scene where the music of Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Chuck Berry and others of the era are alive and well; that’s Solid Gold Mondays. Elon Shomaker delves into soul vinyl of the 50s and 60s weekly for a crowd usually 20-30 years younger than the actual music but it comes together smoothly. Drinks specials like $1 PBRs ensure the dance floor is lively before the end of the night. Free. Growlers Pourhouse. www.growlerspourhouse.com. (Mike McCray)

Cursive It’s a shame that after a decade and a half of making taut music, rockers Cursive are still not huge. In a fairer musical world they should be all over the radio, swatting aside over-produced, one-hit wannabees plaguing the airwaves. The Omaha-based band pours shuffling jazz vibes that expand into punk-touched, noise-caressed numbers. It may be a confounding blend, but one that makes the listener nod, sway, and want more. With Harvard, Yardwork, and Andy the Doorbum. $12-$15. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com. (Samir Shukla)

Marc Broussard, Yasmin Levy tonight (3/6/11)

Posted By on Sun, Mar 6, 2011 at 8:46 AM

Marc Broussard Louisiana crooner’s distinct voice wraps around funk, jazz, and R&B, be they dance numbers or sinewy ballads, with equal panache. His ability to channel old-school soul, while strolling through the unmistakable New Orleans musical alleyways, makes for a dandy date night. Bring your dancing shoes. Broussard has a new album in the works that’s slated for release in June. With openers Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. $20. Neighborhood Theatre. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com. (Samir Shukla)

Yasmin Levy Preservation is important to Israeli songstress Yasmin Levy. Through music she aims to capture the essence of Ladino (a dying language derived from Judeo-Spanish, which dates back to 15th century Spain). Mixing it with Andalusian Flamenco, she also draws from Middle Eastern influences to produce a passionate arrangement of songs that can be enjoyed whether you understand them or not. Currently on a world-wide tour in support of her latest album, Sentir. Levy will visit the Q.C. for a performance at McGlohon Theatre. $19.50 and up. 7 p.m. McGlohon Theatre, 345 N. College St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalcenter.org. (Anita Overcash)

Wiz Khalifa tonight (3/5/11)

Posted By on Sat, Mar 5, 2011 at 8:46 AM

Wiz Khalifa Khalifa single-handedly made “Black and Yellow” the favorite colors for most through his smash hit of the same name. Plucked from mere obscurity, this mixtape maven and his Taylor Gang crew created a lifestyle of unlimited tattoos that includes a love for a particular green that’s grown on trees. Fresh off the success of his highly acclaimed mixtape Kush & Orange Juice and the valedictorian spot in XXL Magazine Freshmen 10, Wiz Khalifa is ready to take the hip-hop world by storm. With ink on a new deal with Atlantic Records and debut of his first mainstream album, Rolling Papers, the Pittsburgh native is well on his way to total hip-hop world domination. $40. Live review: Franz Nicolay

Posted By on Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 6:36 PM

Franz Nicolay, David Dondero, Ben Henry

The Milestone

March 2, 2011

The Deal: Last time Franz Nicolay came through town I just so happened to stumble upon him and was left speechless. I was hoping that he would come back through soon. I didn't have my hopes up because he reigns from Brooklyn and, usually when touring acts come through, it is quite some time before they make their way back. When I noticed he was booked for the Milestone, I was utterly stoked.

Ashers tonight (3/4/11)

Posted By on Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 8:46 AM

Ashers Gotta love footstomping songs that clock in under three minutes. Even better, toss in some louder, faster slammers that clock in under two minutes. These Boston punks know the drill. What more can you say? It’s fast, angry, and darn catchy. Pretty much what good asswhoopin’ punk rock ought to be. There are plenty of shout along chorus moments, where the guitars and drums pause ever so slightly for the back-up howlers, or the pit denizens, to join in. With Dirty South Revolutionaries, All Rise, I.E.D., and the Letdowns. $8-$10. Milestone. www.themilestoneclub.com.
