Matisyahu spits signature Hasidic reggae rhymes tonight (8/30/11)

Posted By on Tue, Aug 30, 2011 at 7:00 AM

Matisyahu I remember when Matisyahu first hit the national scene and everyone was raving about his abilities. Now, here it is a few years later, and his status hasn’t grown as much as that initial hype. Maybe there’s only so far you can go with Hasidic reggae? I’m not sure, but it’s not for lack of trying, or talent. He can spit rhymes with the best of them, but nothing’s reached the popularity of “King Without a Crown.” $25-$30. Live review: White Trash Party #7

White Trash Party #7 w/ Iron Cordoba
The Chop Shop
Aug. 27, 2011

The Deal: A few hundred people put on their trashiest outfits and head to the Chop Shop for an annual event featuring plenty of PBR and music.

The Good: I got to the venue around 10 p.m., just in time for the Trashy Bridesmaid Contest featuring some see-thru clothing and PBR. After a brief "wedding," about 15 minutes later, Iron Cordoba hit the stage for a roughly two-hour set of music featuring covers and some originals.

Live review: Junior Astronomers, Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun, Birds with Teeth

Junior Astronomers, Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun, Birds with Teeth
Tremont Music Hall
Aug. 26, 2011

The Deal: Two Charlotte bands — Junior Astronomers and Birds with Teeth — hit Tremont's smaller Casbah stage along with Atlanta's Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun for a great, sweaty night of music.

The Good: When I walked in — I had just left Grace Potter's show across town — Birds with Teeth was just getting started. The Charlotte quartet plays a punk brand of rock that would be at home on Warped Tour — though without all the unnecessary screamo. There can be some pop sensibility in the melodies, but it definitely has an edge to it that's right at home in Tremont. The group exchanged smiles throughout their set, feeding off the crowd's energy.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
The Fillmore Charlotte
Aug. 26, 2011

Grace_Potter2.JPG

Grace Potter hit The Fillmore Charlotte last Friday night for a sold-out show packed of her bluesy rock. Hard to believe that the last time she was in town for a headlining spot, she was packing the Visulite. I guess that Avett Brothers opening spot paid off. She's getting more popular and her style has gone a bit glam, but it's not like she's compromised her artistic integrity. This is the same Grace Potter that was playing to a couple hundred at The Visulite — her vocal abilities remain intact.

Live review: Boolow, Totimoshi, Music Hates You, Clavius, Greevace

Boolow, Totimoshi, Music Hates You, Clavius, Greevace
The Milestone
Aug. 26, 2011

The Deal: I have had the privilege of witnessing the progression and demise of Clavius throughout the years. What started as a project featuring some of our best local talent, gained a following quickly then dissipated just as fast, as one of their members, Jeff Wilkerson, moved away to pursue a degree in law. When Jeff would venture back to his hometown, reunions took place, allowing those of us who had them in our heart to re-experience the music missed immensely. While they played a few shows over the summer, alas, it was time for Jeff to leave again, forcing them to break up for good this time. There was not a chance in hell that I would miss their last show, especially considering they were playing with Greevace, Totimoshi, Boolow and Music Hates You, all bands that, too, I hold in high regard.

Live review: The Queers, The Flat Tires, Planet Piss, All Rise

The Queers, The Flat Tires, Planet Piss, All Rise
The Milestone
Aug. 25, 2011

The Deal: I have wanted to see the Queers for years but it seems there has always been something that got in the way of my plans and thus, I have never gotten to go. That's why this time I was absolutely determined to make it happen, scheduling myself to be there as soon as I had seen the show was booked. Although, because of my long-term desire to see them, I didn't care too much who else was on the bill, low and behold, the line up built was fantastic — two local punk bands, All Rise and Planet Piss and another North Carolina punk fiasco, The Flat Tires. I was stoked beyond belief for a night of punk rock and the madness that would inevitably ensue.

Steve Nieve Band brings diverse set of prog piano tunes tonight (8/27/11)

Posted By on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 7:00 AM

Steve Nieve Band He’s already had his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ticket punched for his work with Elvis Costello’s Attractions (and now the Imposters), but Nieve has enjoyed a successful career outside that orbit, too. As a sessions gunslinger and touring pianist, he’s played keys for a range of acts as diverse The Neville Brothers, Graham Parker, Squeeze, Burt Bacharach, David Bowie, and French chanteuse (and Depp squeeze) Vanessa Paradis. But he also has a solo output that includes rock records, film scores and even a classical opera. He’s not your typical piano player, obviously, and his songs — tilting more prog than punk — aren’t run-of-the-mill rock, either, though he’s been known to drop a Costello hit or two in his sets. $12. Cora Kay Benefit for daughter of Situationals vocalist tonight (8/27/11)

thesituationals_55596_23.jpg

Cora Kay Benefit The only good thing about cancer is that it brings out people’s compassion, which is certainly the case with this benefit for Cora Kay Tucker, the 2-year-old daughter of Situationals vocalist Candice Tucker (pictured) and her husband Michael. Diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma in March, Cora is making great progress but needs a bone-marrow transplant. So a horde of local acts are donating time to celebrate the tyke’s big spirit and, as the press release aptly says, “give cancer the finger.” The lineup includes her mom’s band, South 85, Old Milwaukee, Garrigan, Hardcore Lounge, Jon Lindsay and the Aqualads. There’ll be food, a raffle, and a silent auction, too. $10 suggested donation. 5 p.m. Snug Harbor. www.snugrock.com. (John Schacht)

10-in-10 CD reviews (8/26/2011)

Posted By on Fri, Aug 26, 2011 at 3:07 PM

Each Friday, in an effort to listen to everything that hits my desk, I review 10 recently released CDs in 10 words each:

Alyssa Graham The Lock, Stock & Soul EP — Four-song album full of folk-pop precedes third album.

Alexis Marceaux Orange Moon — New Orleans musician’s soothing vocal style has refreshing musical accompaniment.

Trevor Hall Everything Everytime Everywhere — Ben Harper and Bob Marley influence apparent on sophomore album.

Sunny Sweeney Concrete — Yet another pop-country singer who sounds like the rest.

Tom Hambridge Boom! — Singer/producer releases traditional blues album, sounds like George Thorogood.

Brian Molnar & The Naked Hearts Of the Fall — Strong infusion of country in this mediocre Americana/folk album.

Barbra Streisand What Matters Most — Babs sings the exclusive lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

JK and the Lost Boys Time is Trouble — Sister Hazel guitarist offers seven songs with his solo venture. (At the Evening Muse on Sept. 2.)

Luke Bryan Tailgates & Tanlines — Getting to point where I can’t tell country artists apart.

Heartsounds Drifter — Band’s semi-post-hardcore music gets punk vocal style overlay.
