Alive After Five celebrates 11 years... of cover bands

Posted By on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 1:31 PM

Alive After Five will celebrate its 11th year this summer. It's a long tradition of bringing mediocre cover bands to Uptown stages on Thursday evenings where guys in business suits and girls in their finest summer dresses can hang out, get drunk and listen to what amounts to a glorified top-40 radio station.

Of course, people will complain about the above comment and say, "No one goes to listen to the music." To which I reply, "Then there's no reason not to give local, original bands the chance to play." Sadly, the only original band I noticed on the long list is Simplified.

Once again, I call on the organizers of Alive After Five to support the music scene and give Charlotte bands a chance to play at their weekly event. Offer local, original acts a 20- or 30-minute spot before or after one of the cover bands. Allow them to sell their merchandise on site. Perhaps you could give them a bit of money, too, but most of all, give them the opportunity. Don't wait until next year. You can still add them on to the shows listed below.

Oh, and it's now called AT&T Alive After Five. A sponsor means they can afford to get better quality bands out on the stage, right? You would think...

Tenacious D coming to the Fillmore on June 26

Posted By on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Tenacious D will perform at the Fillmore Charlotte on June 26. The band, comprised of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, is touring in support of its upcoming album, Rize of the Fenix, set for release on May 15, 2012. Tickets go on sale on Friday, March 30, at 10 a.m.

The band released a video for the first single from the album, "To Be the Best." It's a six-minute romp that tells the "story" of Tenacious D from the pathetic showing of the movie The Pick of Destiny to the reunion of the band.

Live review: The Black Keys, Bojangles Coliseum, 3/24/2012

The Black Keys like to keep it simple. "We are the Black Keys. Let's get it started," was all guitarist Dan Auerbach had to say before the band launched into a 90-minute set at Charlotte's sold-out Bojangles Coliseum on March 24, 2012.

Drummer Patrick Carney unleashed the familiar thump of "Howlin' for You" as Auerbach released its riff and the duo quickly found its rhythm. A majority of the set focused on the Keys' latest albums, 2010's Brothers and 2011's El Camino, though they did find moments to revisit their past.

After a handful of recent songs including the latest single, "Gold on the Ceiling," the band went back to 2004's Rubber Factory for "Girl is On My Mind" and later "Your Touch" from 2006's Magic Potion.

George Benson to play Knight Theater tonight (3/25/12)

Posted By on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 9:31 AM

GEORGE BENSON His sweetly fluid guitar ranges from cool and creamy soul-jazz to fractured hard-bop. But it's George Benson's silky smooth vocals - think Stevie Wonder minus the underpinning angst and an octave or two - that nearly derailed Benson's career. Singing, particularly scatting to a single string solo, on 1976's "This Masquerade" netted Benson the biggest hit of his career. By the mid-'80s, attempts to duplicate this commercial fluke had mired him in the dire Sargasso Sea of smooth jazz. Fortunately, Benson's inner jazz cat re-emerged, bringing his guitar off the back burner without displacing his vocals. A true rarity, George Benson is a slickly commercial elder statesman who can still swing like a motherfucker. $69.50-$99.50. Knight Theater. (Pat Moran)

The Black Keys play Bojangles Coliseum (3/24/12)

Posted By on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 9:28 AM

THE BLACK KEYS There’s no way in hell I can listen to “Lonely Boy” without a foot tap, finger snap, head bob or some kind of illegitimate dance move going on — usually I’m alone in my car though. Needless to say, the arena’s gonna be rockin’ when the Ohio duo struts and grooves through its catchy, blues-infused tunes. Increased popularity hasn’t diminished the band’s ability to write an updated version of front-porch rumblers. With Arctic Monkeys. $41.50-$51.50. 8 p.m. Bojangles’ Coliseum.

English Beat play Neighborhood Theatre (3/24/12)

Posted By on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 8:24 AM

ENGLISH BEAT I razzed (well, a wee bit) these Two-Tone heroes a while back for tilting toward nostalgia act. Then I saw ’em again and all was forgiven. Dave Wakeling, who’s morphed into a socialist SoCal surfer (“gnarly, comrade!”) and his “hired hands” were clearly keeping the spirit alive without diluting it even in toaster Rankin’ Roger’s absence. Which spirit? Well, along with the Specials and the Selecter, the Beat (their real name, btw) and other Two-Toners were key cogs in arguably the most interesting era in rock ’n’ roll, when white punk rockers and black reggae stars joined arms to fight racism and Margaret Thatcher (aka, the same thing). Great era, great music. $22. Neighborhood Theatre.

Frontier Ruckus play Evening Muse tonight (3/24/12)

Posted By on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 8:21 AM

FRONTIER RUCKUS The Ramseur Records signee uses the plaintive sounds of bowed saw, melodica, fiddle and banjo to draw desolate wintry plains-portraits of loneliness and suburban decay (they’re from Michigan, and their 2010 full-length was called Deadmalls & Nightfalls; capiche?). But they also augment that with fanfaring trumpets and huge percussion for Matthew Milia’s summery warblings about first-blush love and familial redemption. So, somewhere between Springsteen’s Nebraska, the Palace Brothers’ Days in the Wake and Sufjan Stevens’ Michigan, Milia looks the present straight in the eye instead of pipe-dreaming about some never-never golden past and in the process creates something close to timeless. Early show. $10. The Evening Muse.

Hamilton Loomis rock Double Door Inn (3/23/12)

Posted By on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 9:14 AM

HAMILTON LOOMIS
Unabashedly straightforward with his blues, R&B and funky rock, Loomis has a singular mission: to bridge the old with the new. The multi-instrumentalist excels on six strings with thick riffs, precise licks and crooning that eschews all pretensions. For those seeking good-time party music with a groove-laden rhythm section, accented by horns, the Texan and his posse deliver. A protégé of the legendary Bo Diddley, who took the youngster under his wing, Loomis prowls the gin joints with that “grab a drink and sway along” vibe. $12-$15. Double Door Inn.

Chris Webby plays Tremont tonight (3/23/12)

Posted By on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 9:11 AM

CHRIS WEBBY This Connecticut-born MC turned heads last December when his EP, There Goes The Neighborhood, shot past Jay-Z, Kanye, Drake and Lil Wayne to sit atop the iTunes rap charts for a day. For his fans, it’s was “about time.” For others, it was “Who is this kid?” The 23-year-old is six mixtapes into his career and hits Charlotte on the tail end of his 40-city tour. Kids These Days are also on the bill. $15-$18. Tremont Music Hall.
