Lollapalooza 2010
Grant Park, Chicago
Aug. 7, 2010
Day two of Lollapalooza got started, for me, around 1:45 p.m. with a set by Blues Traveler. The blues-rock jam band kicked off its set with "Runaround" before going into a cover of Sublime's "What I Got," both of which quickly won over the crowd.
Since 2005, Lollapalooza has been located in the heart of Chicago, taking over Grant Park for weekends full of music.
The day got started early, as B.O.B. kicked things off at 11:30 a.m. The backdrop of the Chicago skyline made for fantastic views throughout the day as more and more people filed in a good number of them dressed in their favorite drag, leather, lace and wigs for the night's Lady Gaga performance.
The Ettes hit the BMI stage around 12:30 for their brand of what I'd call indie punk. Definitely a group I'd be interested in seeing again.

The Deal: Legendary musician hits Charlotte for two-hour-and-45-minute show full of hits, classics and solo tunes.
Sick Puppies w/ Janus, It's Alive
Amos' Southend
July 27, 2010
The Deal: Australia's Sick Puppies rocks Amos', brings along some cheese and whine.
The Good: I'll talk about the opening bands later, so let's just jump straight to the main event. The thing that struck me immediately was bassist Emma Anzai, who got into it from the first notes a bit of slap bass, driving the music and rarely standing still. Singer/guitarist Shimon Moore balances smooth vocals with something a little bit more raspier when he screams for a tone that works well with the music.
After playing "My World," the band ran through a few bars of Rage Against the Machine's "Bombtrack" before starting "Odd One."
Of course Moore said it was just for Charlotte, but I'm guessing they do the three-song acoustic breakdown at every tour stop. They played "All the Same," "What Are you Looking For?" and "Too Many," before ramping the sound back up to 10.
From screamo to rock, from punk to post-hardcore there was a little bit of everything at the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, which stopped by Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on July 22, 2010.
The day got started early 11:15 a.m. with a set by The Pretty Reckless and ended around 8 p.m.
I caught bits and pieces of about 25 bands on the seven stages that make up the tour from the insanity of Andrew W.K. and the leaping of Dillinger Escape Plan to the rock of Sum 41 and Dirty Little Rabbits (which features Shawn "Clown" Crahan of Slipknot). There was the celtic punk of Flatfoot 56 and the screaming metal of Iwrestledabearonce.

Deer Tick w/ Dead Confederate
Visulite Theatre
July 25, 2010
The Deal: Deer Tick returns to Charlotte with Dead Confederate in tow.
The Good: Dead Confederate hit the stage first for a roughly 40-minute set full of loud rock with a Southern edge. The quintet featured two guitars, bass, drums and a keyboardist for something a bit more grungy and indie about it's approach. The loud volume offered a kind of wall of noise leaving the stage with lyrics and occasional keyboard notes hitting the high spots amongst the din.

Patty Griffin Tribute
Evening Muse
July 14, 2010
On July 14, 2010, the inaugural Patty Griffin Tribute Night was held at the Evening Muse. A good number of Charlotte-area musicians gathered to pay tribute to the singer-songwriter in front of a packed house.
Among those performing were Reeve Coobs, Miranda Reger, Andrea McGhee, Amissville, Donna Duncan, Etta Lea, Eva Gael, Wavy Space, Jess Mitchell and a bunch more. A house band, dubbed the Silver Bells, included John Tosco, Arrie Bozeman and Joe Kuhlman.
With singalongs and good participation from the crowd and artists, organizer Lea Kuhlmann hinted that they just might do this again next year.
