Autism Aware Fare today

Posted By on Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 11:49 AM

Today, if you have lunch at one of the listed restaurants below, you'll be eating for a good cause. Here's a clip from the press release:

The annual "Autism Aware Fare" held by the Autism Society of North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County Chapter (ASNC-MCC ) will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. On that day, participating area restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds for the benefit of area children and adults with autism.

The event, which was first held in 2002, is the main fundraiser for ASNC-MCC and funds local chapter activities including over $20,000 in grants to support local teachers who serve students with autism. It is also a means of communicating with and educating the community about autism. In addition to donating proceeds, participating restaurants will display posters and table toppers with information about autism. The group’s event web site, www.autismawarefare.org, has more information including locations and times of participating restaurants as well as a list of sponsors.

The hunt for good Chinese food... Part 1

Posted By on Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 5:12 PM

I've been living in the area for two years now and am still on the hunt for good Chinese food.

Let me clarify this though — for the first year, I was living off of exit 33 in Mooresville. If you're ever in that neck of the woods, I highly recommend Rice Fun in the Target shopping center. I used to go there at least once a week and was never disappointed. It had the absolute best flavor of any Chinese food I've ever tasted.

I would usually order the "Supreme Family" which had chicken, pork, beef and shrimp, plus broccoli, baby corn, mushrooms and red peppers, rice and a spring roll (or egg roll) all for just over $5. You couldn't beat the price, quality or flavor of it. I should say that I never ordered anything I didn't like though, and the dumplings are fantastic.

For the last year, I've been living closer to town — much closer, thankfully. However, now I can't find respectable Chinese food. Granted, I have a high standard in my mind thanks to Rice Fun, but I just haven't found any place that I would go to for a second visit let alone something weekly.

Eating Peruvian at Genaro's Rotisserie and Grill

Posted By on Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 4:59 PM

If the food at Genaro's is any indication of how all food is like in Peru, book me a ticket asap.

I visited Genaro's Rotisserie and Grill yesterday and ate a feast. The restaurant located on Park Road Extension served up delicious Peruvian Bistek a lo Pobre - 12 oz. Rib-eye steak marinated with special spices topped with chimichurri sauce, served with white rice, spicy Peruvian beans, two fried eggs, French fries, and fried plantains. We asked for the "yellow sauce" (not sure what is in it) and dipped everything into it. Every single thing on the platter was delicious. The plantains were the best I've ever had -- they were soft and fried so that the outsides had a delicate crunch and were slightly caramelized and sweet. I still dream of the steak paired with the fried eggs and chimichurri sauce.

And though I was stuffed from finishing every last morsel of the meal, I couldn't possibly skip trying one of their beautiful desserts. I tried the Milhojas, a layered dessert made of crispy, flaky puff pastry, sweet vanilla cream, and thick dulce de leche. Milhojas literally translated means "million leaves," which is the perfect name for it. It was truly terrific in both taste and texture, but next time I can't wait to try the Tres Leches cake.

Genero's has two locations:
