It came from MySpace

Posted By on Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 12:44 PM

I actually heard about this on MTV this morning (weird, eh?):

idlewarship.jpg
Alt-soul vocalist Res and conscious rapper Talib Kweli have formed a new two-person group called Idle Warship.

Kweli said in an interview on MTV's "Sucker Free" show that the group was created so Res and him could create more dance-floor friendly music.

No CD is slated for release at the moment, but you can hear some of the group's tracks on their MySpace page: www.myspace.com/idlewarship

Pay attention to me, I’m making crazy Biblical amendments

Posted By on Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 11:21 AM

By Mike Huckabee

Did you hear what I’m up to? No? You stopped paying attention? I figured as much. So I’m doing some super wacky conservative crap. I endorsed an amendment to Colorado’s constitution that will define life as beginning at conception. I also said I want it added to the U.S. Constitution.

You see, back when the Constitution was written, there were no abortions. If an unwanted pregnancy occurred, the father would completely abandon the woman and move to another town. The child would grow up a bastard, never to be given a fair shake and everyone was happy (except the single moms and bastard children).

I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume if the founding fathers were resurrected as half-dead zombies, the first thing they would do would be to pass this amendment. (The second thing, naturally, would be to eat our brains.)

Think before you send

Posted By on Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 9:32 AM

If I get one more e-mail from a black person calling Hillary Clinton a bitch, I am going to scream. First of all, this election has confirmed for me that sexism is alive and well in the United States. The fact that so many people are comfortable circulating e-mails calling her a bitch in jest, seriousness, or both, is indicative of this issue. Sexism is so pervasive in this country that we do not even see it. For black people to use a pejorative term to describe a woman inside or outside of the community is deplorable. Funny. She and Bill used to be considered black by those with extremely low standards for conferring race upon people. Now, she's just a "bitch" from Arkansas. Hmm. That's mighty black of you. I guess that's part of her "blackness" since that term was used freely to describe female slaves by slave owners. Coupled with the fact that most of the e-mails have come from women, this is what I call a "WTF?" moment. While you are busy calling Hillary out of her name, you might want to check out her platform, which is the only one with any proposals that will benefit women. She has proposals about healthcare, daycare and women's rights. That "bitch" was the first person to confront female genital mutilation abroad, to demand that the U.S. intervene in Rwanda, and has played a major role in the Children's Defense Fund. You don't have to support her, but you don't have to denigrate her either. Think before you send.

News Roundup 2/27/08

Posted By on Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 4:06 PM

Obama Tops New National Polls: The Clinton campaign has one new worry. Not only is Obama-mania showing no signs of slowing, but Democrat and Republican voters alike see him as the candidate with the most electablity. The latest USA Today/ Gallup poll asked Republicans which Democrat McCain would have a better chance of beating. The answer was Clinton 66 percent, Obama 18 percent. Obama thinks the answer is this: “It’s a choice between going into the general election with the Republicans already united against us, or running with a campaign that has already united Americans of all parties around the agenda for change. Now that’s the choice."

CIAA Plays Big Role in Stellar Documentary: Film maker Dan Klores directs and produces Black Magic a 4 hour documentary that will be viewed on Thursday, February 28 at Spirit Square’s McGlohon Theatre at 1 p.m. The film is a must see for any basketball fan. It not only showcases the talents of CIAA legends like Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, but also the struggles that the players and coaches had to endure to play a sport that many black men today take for granted.

Why in the hell is R. Kelly hosting a CIAA party across the street from a skating rink?

Posted By on Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 3:03 PM

Chester Chester, I mean R&B singer R. Kelly is coming to Charlotte for a CIAA party at a venue that just happens to be across the street from a skating rink. A place where a lot of little kids hang out.

Makes you wonder if Kelly knew this when he signed on to host the party at Backstage Night Club on Harris Boulevard. And we're talking about the grimy part of Harris at the intersection of Albemarle Road.

Mothers, lock up your young daughters, or they might come home Friday night smelling like pee-pee.

Post-Oscar ponderings

Posted By on Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 9:39 AM

Highlights of this year’s Academy Award telecast:

* Host Jon Stewart bringing Best Original Song co-winner Marketa Irglova (for Once’s “Falling Slowly”) back to the stage to give her acceptance speech after being cut off by the orchestra.

* Cate Blanchett as the pit bull in No Country for Old Men.

* Marion Cotillard’s giddy, impassioned acceptance speech for winning Best Actress for La Vie En Rose.

* Javier Bardem’s equally emotional acceptance speech for winning Best Supporting Actor for No Country for Old Men.

* Presenter Jennifer Garner looking awesome as always.

The low points:

* The often shoddy CGI work in The Golden Compass winning Best Visual Effects over the far more spectacular FX in Transformers.

* The wax museum piece Elizabeth: The Golden Age winning Best Costume Design over Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (and, even though it didn’t have a chance, Across the Universe).

* Seven-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins losing two more times (for both No Country for Old Men and The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford).

* Having to see that damn Jerry Seinfeld bee from Bee Movie once again.

* Learning that director Michael Bay (Bad Boys II, Pearl Harbor) is a member of the Academy. WTF?

Breaking it down old school at the CIAA

Posted By on Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 1:20 AM

It's clear that the first few days of the CIAA basketball tournament is strictly old school. Emphasis on the old. Take the dance contest during half time of Tuesday's contest between Johnson C. Smith and St. Paul. A line of old school CIAA fans got in a Soul Train line at half court and did some of their old school dance moves. The lady from Bowie State University moved her feet and hips like the Godfather of Soul and she did it in stilleto boots. You go girl — er — ma'am. But the crowd really went wild when an old man from Fayetteville State dropped down and did a spilt. He only did it once, though. The lady from JCSU made the crowd scream when she dropped it like it was lukewarm. (I'm sure at her age, her hotness comes in flashes).

There's nothing like Old School CIAA fans. The old men sitting around not giving a damn how they look, laughing so loud that you have to look at them. Sometimes they sound as if they're having a heart attack and you want to check and see if they're all right. But as soon as the Virginia State University cheerleaders, also known as the Woo-Woos, walk by and the old men get all googly eyed, you know that they're just fine or someone popped a Viagra.

Dead day in the CIAA

Posted By on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 4:55 PM

It’s dead inside the Charlotte Bobcats Arena. It’s almost like being at a Charlotte Bobcats’ game. But it’s the Women’s portion of the CIAA tournament and ain’t nobody watching. Is it because no one cares about the women?

Possibly.

But these girls play hard. Even if Fayetteville State and St. Augustine’s had 84 turnovers in their game, they tried.

I never understood why people bought ticket books and didn’t go to all of the games. But that’s just me, I’m cheap as hell and I want to get my money’s worth. For the 3 p.m. women’s contest (Bowie State vs. Virginia Union), there had to be about 1,000 people inside the arena.

Not a good look party people. There is one thing I’ve noticed though, the people in the arena right now aren’t worried about what they’re wearing or how they look. I guess you don’t have to be when there’s no one around to see you. Sort of like that tree falling in the forest and no one being around.

Those stubborn Koreans

Posted By on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 3:13 PM

Korean people are really stubborn.

I can say this because my mom's from South Korea and I've been engulfed in the Korean community for more than 20 years. I wouldn't say that I'm an expert on the Korean culture (far from it!), and perhaps this is a hugely unfair generalization, but from my experiences, I've found that a great deal of Korean people are really, really stubborn.

And while I've never encountered a person from North Korea, I wouldn't be surprised if they were just as stubborn as their Southern neighbors. With that rude allegation being stated, I have to say that I'm really quite proud of the fact that The New York Philharmonic Orchestra played in Pyongyang earlier today. It was the first time an American orchestra has ever played in the communist country. Ever. Can you imagine the hurdles that they had to leap to make that happen? Maybe tensions between the United States and North Korea will start to subside a bit. Perhaps maybe even the North Koreans will realize that Americans aren't the devil, and there is a better way of life out there.

Or maybe nothing will change at all. If that turns out to be the case, all I can say is, stubborn bastards.
