2013 Wolves, Overmountain Men, Ken Will Morton

Thirsty Beaver

Dec. 19, 2009

Childers1

The Deal: I'm not exactly sure who the headliner here would be — Ken Will Morton opened up the night, Overmountain Men packed the place for their set, 2013 Wolves entertained a new set of patrons for their closing set. Maybe a co-headlining bill is a better description.

Ho anthems of the decade (2005-2009)

Posted By on Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 4:15 PM

The second half of this decade saw the death of the extravagantly hedonistic music video but not the death of pure slut music. Here's some ho anthems of the last 5 years.

Ying Yang Twins - "Wait (The Whisper Song)" (2005)

For the man whore in all of us, this song was a great salvo to say exactly what she wants to hear. It's like the grown equivalent to "wait till you see my new toys" as a kid except this toy, hopefully, won't break.

Play N Skillz feat. Adina Howard & Krayzie Bone - "The World Has Too Many Freaks" (2005)

Sampling the classic, "Moments in Love" that we all grew up hearing on the Quiet Storm. Then add the woman who wanted a, "freak in the morning and a freak in the evening" in the 90s, urging to "freak her on counter, freak her on the table "and yeah, Krayzie Bone is just icing on the ho cake here, people.

Lil Boosie & Webbie - "Girl Give Me That" (2005)

"I know you want it girl, don't act like you don't want it girl, you want it just as bad as I do..." The ultimate sales pitch for "hoes" on the fence about the evening's endeavors. These two simply demand that they "give me that [lady parts]."

Ho anthems of the decade (2000-2004)

Posted By on Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 11:10 AM

It's come time again for people to make trivial lists counting down everything of the past decade. The best and worse moments, things we'll always remember ... You know, that kinda crap.

Well, I'd be remiss if I didn't count down some of the Ho Anthems of the past decade because if I've learned anything from the past 10 years (8th grade to college graduation for me), it's that freaks just want to get loose. Juvenile's "Back That Ass Up" in 1999 spawned tons of songs encouraging the same behavior, even more, and no one seemed to complain.

Here's some of the songs that would be on a every two-way freak's greatest hits album from this decade.

Trina - "Pull Over" (2000)

Miami's Lil Kim told us early in the decade, what time it was. I mean literally, she said "ain't nan ho got mo booty in the butt,"  how could you not Woop! Woop! after that? This song holds special meaning because it was the first time I got grinded on for real, for real at a party. Ahh, 8th grade... good times.

Through Porchlight, Appalucia, Josh Phillips Folk Festival tonight (12/18/2009)

Posted By on Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 8:19 AM

Through Porchlight Here's a promising combo that's got just the right tones and hues for a moody pop evening. The songs are tightly written with a jazzy, cinematic guitar backdrop. The Charlotte quartet's recent album Don't Wake Up. I Have To has a hazy, twilight feel with fine Euro-pop vocals and strumming throughout. Think date night music. With The Lo and Beholds, Death Becomes Even the Maiden, Junior Astronomers. Tremont Music Hall (Samir Shukla)

Josh Phillips Folk Festival Phillips, the guitarist, singer and percussionist for Asheville funk combo Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, recently left that party band and embarked on to the rootsy project Josh Phillips Folk Festival. JPFF melds reggae, New Orleans jazz, folk, and roots rock that ranges from sparse folk to, quite often, danceable global fusion. With Laura Reed. Neighborhood Theatre (Shukla)

Appalucia First of all, you have to love a band whose bio begins in the early 1800s in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. In the interest of time, I'll skip ahead a couple hundred years, and tell you that Appalucia, a duo comprised of the Milestone-friendly Andy "The Door Bum" Fenstermaker and Cory Zeigler, play (roughly, sometimes very roughly) the same hootin' music said to be played in the holler at the time, namely white-lightnin' spiked country blues twisted with the Holy Spirit and a dash of the devil. Songs can go from pretty to pretty fucked-up (lyrically speaking) at the drop of a bowler hat, which, it might be said, constitutes a pretty fair representation of what mountain life was like (way) back in the day. Plus, the boys' beards are consistent with the times, which always adds authenticity points. With South Side Punx, 25 Minutes To Go, Summer Night Shade. Milestone (Timothy C. Davis)

Kris Allen in concert (12-17-2009)

Posted By on Thu, Dec 17, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Kris Allen With the release of his new self--titled album, the season eight American Idol winner, not to be confused with crotch-thrusting runner-up Adam Lambert, is coming to perform for Charlotte. While Allen is best known for his folk-inspired representations of modern pop songs, he is classified as a pop/rock performer. On Idol, Allen sang "She Works Hard for the Money," "What's Goin' On" and "We Are the Champions," to name a few, and if that doesn't prove his versatility, maybe his skill of playing several instruments such as guitar, keyboard and piano might do the trick. All in all, expect an exceptional performance. Amos' Southend (Nicole Pietrantonio)

'Hold' music could be so hot

Posted By on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 3:52 PM

Don't you hate this? "Due to unusually high call volume, blah blah blah ..." depending on how bad you want your wireless interent to work or that shiny piece of crap on QVC that grandma is dying for, chances are you'll wait it out.

Usually jazzy and upbeat, hold music is the country cousin of elevator music.

What if you called the Police and the 9-1-1 operator had to put you on hold, and everything they played was about law enforcement. The theme from Cops, The Clash's cover of "I Fought The Law" would send a certain subliminal message. What about KRS-One's "Sound of Da Police," I mean that's really what you want to hear, right? Since you're calling them and all. N.W.A.'s "Fuck The Police" and Bob Marley + Eric Clapton's "I Shot The Sheriff" obviously missing.

Aram Shelton's Fast Citizens (12-16-2009)

Posted By on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 3:50 PM

Aram Shelton's Fast Citizens The observant will note that the last time through the Fast Citizens flew under tenor saxophonist Keefe Jackson's moniker. Jackson's still on board, but his ceding of the marquee to alto sax man Shelton points directly to the Fast Citizens' collective aesthetic. And that, in turn, infuses the music of this talented Chicago-based sextet – and their fantastic, Shelton-penned Two Cities – with the give-and-take essential to any jazz ensemble worth a damn. Toss in Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Josh Berman on cornet, and a rhythm machine of Frank Rosaly (drums) and Anton Hatwich (bass), and this is like a touring All-Star team with a different compositional ace on the mound each record. A must for jazz and free music fans. With CJ Boyd and Great Architect. At 201212 (1212 10th St.)

Dear Santa...

Posted By on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Dear Santa,

It’s me again. And yes, I have been a good, well, ok boy this year. I know next week is Christmas so I wanted to get my list to you in time because I think this year it’s gonna take some work on your part to get all this done. But you’re the guy that makes things happen this time of the year, right? And look at this way, the below list might be tough, but it’s not just for me – this is for the good of all man (and woman) kind! I’m not asking for a 50” flat screen or a Wii (although if you have a few extras, I’d be happy to help lighten your load).

We can both agree the music world needs some help, so below is my list of things you can do to save the day. You can make 2010 the comeback year for music! You’ll be a hero! I even put them in order of importance with the least important first and the most important last – trying to make it easy on you big guy. So without further ado:

10. Auto-tune – Can we officially kill this please? I know Jay-Z already tried, but I figure with your clout this could be a done deal. Sorry, T-Pain.

9. Pink – woman? Or post-op tranny? Can we please get a “once and for all” official ruling on this? Teenage boys across the globe are worried – should they think she’s hot? Is it wrong to think she’s hot? Is she a woman or is this the final scene of The Crying Game all over again? For the sake of the kids, man!
