The Rocketboys rocket into Charlotte - Tonight @ Snug Harbor

Posted By on Fri, Nov 4, 2011 at 9:44 AM

Within a few notes, Austin band The Rocketboys unwrap their muse — ambient, floating songs that rock with poignant subtleties. Taking their time in unfolding songs with lyrical prowess, moody guitars and vocals, the combo also makes a case for late-night driving music. RIYL: Coldplay, space rock.

Also on the bill are With My Captain, The Wintersounds and Birds With Teeth.

$7. Snug Harbor.

Trombone Shorty tonight at the Visualite Theatre

Posted By on Thu, Nov 3, 2011 at 8:52 AM

Like most great New Orleans musicians, Trombone Shorty brings enthusiasm to the stage that’s as unique as the overwhelming flavor of the city itself. Growing up in the Tremé neighborhood, he’s been performing since the age of four and has talent well beyond his 25 years. His vocals are as strong as his horn, too.

With Kids These Days. $17-$20. 8 p.m. Visulite Theatre.

Ray Davies at The Fillmore Charlotte - Tonight

Posted By on Wed, Nov 2, 2011 at 9:37 AM

Ray Davies led the legendary Kinks for 33 years, and while the output was notoriously so-so in later years, Ray Davies’ reputation was already sacrosanct when he put out a pair of not-too-shabby solo records in 2006 and 2007 (Other People’s Lives and Workingman’s Café). But now comes See My Friends, the kind of vanity project/victory lap LP that makes you blanch with horror. Re-doing classic Kinks songs with the likes of Jon Bon Jovi, Mumford & Sons and Smashing Pumpkins’ chief tool Billy Corgan completely undermines more compelling duets with Spoon, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Black and the late Alex Chilton. Still, maybe he’ll play “Lola” live in its entirety (he never used to!)

$52-$69.50. The Fillmore Charlotte.

Live review: Jayhawks

Jayhawks
McGlohon Theater @ Spirit Square
Oct. 29, 2011

The sun still shines. The rain still falls. And everything’s alright forever when Mark Olson and Gary Louris of the Jayhawks sing together. Thank goodness for small consistencies. Something to bank on in these uncertain times, ya know?

Such was the case Saturday night at a nearly sold-out McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square, where a very appreciative crowd drank in a stellar performance by the recently reunited alt-country pioneers from Minnesota. Long overdue, warmly received and definitely reaffirming in its “return to form-ness,” the quintet’s Charlotte visit was, simply, top flight.

The band blew into town in full-on reunion mode: Olson’s back after bailing in the mid-1990s due to the familiar “burned-out on the grind” factors; there’s a new CD, the excellent Mockingbird Time (a rich, complex effort that although lacking in the immediate hook/pop gratification department, yet gets better with each listen); and a long string of well-received shows in the U.S. and Europe this past year, with more to come.

And, yes, all the “not missing a step,” “it’s like they never left,” and “they sound as good as always” platitudes surely do ring true for this appearance.
