The club, which last underwent an ownership change in 2010, continues to be the premier spot in the city to see metal acts, but that's not all they showcase. Hip-hop, rock and plenty of local bands regularly perform there. Concert diversity is one of the qualities that's helped keep Tremont going all of these years.
Starting at 8 p.m., the show will also feature DJ Hope Nicholls between sets. Tickets for the all-ages show are $10, with a $3 surcharge for people under 21.
Here's the video for The Blind Dates "Life in the Underground":
The sold-out Childish Gambino concert scheduled for Saturday, March 17, at the Fillmore Charlotte has been postponed. Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, broke his foot last weekend while in Tampa. The concert will now be on July 27 at Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre, meaning more tickets will be available. No word yet on when they will go on sale.
The rapper posted this online:
This past Saturday I fractured my foot on stage in Tampa during a performance and was rushed to the emergency room. The doctors say that if I stay off of my foot for a couple weeks and wear this boot, there’s a good chance they can avoid surgery and start performing again soon.
I’m really upset by the timing of this. CAMP tour will go on, but dates will be postponed. All tour dates affected by this will be rescheduled. HERE. All tickets will be honored for whatever date they’re moved to. In some cases there will be more tickets available because the venues will be bigger, if that’s any sort of silver lining.
I apologize for this and I hope to see all you guys very soon.
Lucky Five — "Would you believe that Matt Sorum (drummer of Guns and Roses, and Velvet Revolver) came and watched our set last night? Believe it!"
Brody and Choch — "Had a blast rocking SXSW Festival last night at Empire Automotive. Bandpage HQ party was rockin!"
Jon Lindsay — "We built this city on pop and roll. #sxsw 2012"
Deniro Farrar — "Went to the airport it was 6 mins away from my hotel got lost it took me 2 hours to find my way back"
ThoughtCriminals — "Chaos. Holy shit, thank you, Austin."
Flagship — "We have all arrived safely here at sxsw! We are so excited to be playing friday at 9:30 at swan dive!"
We couldn't make it to Austin, Texas, this year, but our sister paper, Creative Loafing Tampa sent marketing director Joran Oppelt and food editor Katie Machol there to cover SXSW.
They're covering as much music and culinary delights as they can take in and reporting it all via video, blogs and Twitter posts.
Oppelt caught a random appearance by Delta Spirit that stuck in his head for the rest of the day, was impressed by the energy (and costume changes) of Santigold and shares some of his wisdom from the panels he attended — "Head and Shoulders increased sales by 10% by narrowing their product line from 26 to 15" — and long lines he stood in that "no amount of money or showing of tits would get people in."
SXSW offers bands from around the nation an opportunity to perform at various clubs and label showcases connecting them with everyone from booking agents to label executives and public relations reps. In 2011, Charlotte's Sugar Glyder and Matrimony both made connections at SXSW that led to label deals for each band.
This year, Charlotte is represented by another handful of artists including Lucky Five, Brody and Choch, Jon Lindsay, Deniro Farrar, Flagship, Junior Astronomers and Thought Criminals.
Head over to CL Tampa's site for their coverage, follow Joran on Twitter or check out some of the video's he's posted on YouTube including this one of the Delta Spirit at a record store:
We love public radio here at CL and we understand and support the pledge drives that stations like WFAE in Charlotte do each year. In fact, we encourage any public radio listener to pledge and pledge liberally.
However, some of the promos that public radio airs during pledge week make us cringe.
To wit: This morning, a smart-sounding public radio voice asked WFAE listeners, "Would you rather hear this (cue in a few metal guitar riffs) or this (cue in yawn-inducing music followed by Garrison Keillor welcoming folks to Lake Wobegon)?" The subtext for anyone under 50 is, "Would you rather hear energy on your radio station or the latest ambient collection Music for Geriatric Units?
