BEST PROMOTER OF FAMILY VALUES
CHILDREN'S THEATRE OF CHARLOTTE
For a couple of years, Charlotte's most successful theater company seemed to be devolving, producing a string of plastic, instantly disposable kiddie musicals that babysat more than they educated. Now they're back on message, with such work as Treasure Island, And Then They Came for Me, and Scrooge! - and back on mission, identifying and revivifying the classics. They may be the best anywhere at what they do, and their mighty teen program is far better than this city deserves, with sterling productions of Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies in the past couple of years. While our local libraries are stumbling to stay open, Children's Theatre is the blazing heart of what makes the ImaginOn synergy so glorious, the best reason for families to go to a Charlotte library. Too bad the pro-level training for young performers, grade school and upwards, goes on in a town that can't see the value of providing a career path for theater professionals. Charlotte will only be worthy of this company when we embrace a regional theater with the same vigor as Minneapolis or Seattle.
